Description For Disney-club’s contest 23, Historical Disney;
Ronin Hood. According to ballads sung long-ago and in medieval times and fore-ward told, a heroic, good archer-thief called Robin Hood robbed from the rich and gave to the poor; so in short, Ronin Hood is the same except for the historical twist of the right time but the wrong place, medieval Japan.

I was quickly flipping through medieval Japan, and I found out about the Kamakura Period (1185-1333 AD). Around the Kamakura Period, the samurai-class was rising as well as military technology and etc. which to me, seemed like a very nice time for a rogue hero to help out the poor; Due to the samurai’s previous lack of archery skills, Yabusame 流鏑馬, a traditional Japanese archery on horseback was also developed (influenced outfit); Kyudo 弓道 is another traditional Japanese archery (which Ronin Hood is super-skilled at, so he can particularly pull off a sniper-like aim with his head not looking forward, and his head was not a drawing error) Ronin浪人 was also term used for master-less samurai (who were the Japanese knights) and literally means “wave man” like someone socially adrift; they were commonly thieves, crime bosses, mercenaries or doing other no good things with very few & rare still living to their samurai code of honor like the 47 Ronin (and maybe Ronin Hood).

I choose to put Robin Hood as a fictional Japanese character because all in all, the hero who robs from the rich and gives to the poor can happen at many different times at many different places: yes, unfortunately there may/will be unfairness between the rich and poor, though fortunately as Robin or Ronin Hood taught us: To do good, you may have to do some bad things (like robbing) for the right reasons.

Note: painted with watercolor and a red color-pencil for the feather; I might draw the counterpart Maid Marian for him later (thedodobirdsong.deviantart.com… . Ronin Hood alternative name may have been Ronin Kyudo, too—cheesy.

Robin Hood in Japan. Hmm. That's not a bad idea. Foxes are well liked in Japan anyway.

And as Japanse would say, すごい

Don't misunderstand, my problem is not with the art, style or character!  Just the age! Medival Japan was NOT friendly towards thieves so all I can say is that I hope Robin NEVER gets caught!!!  Still, very interesting concept!

This is a beautiful combination. I love the fact you apply the term Ronin on Robin Hood, because he did not just started out the reclaimer of people's belongings just like that, for he (at least from the adaptation I watched) is a son of the deceased Earl of Loxley.

Nice choice of title. Now all that we're missing is Little John in Japanese theme.

And yeah, uh-huh... not something for your eyes, crewefox . Definitely not within your realm of interest. Yep, this ain't exactly something you like, not your fave thing at all

mmh. . that's an nice idea! unfortunately, I already started on a "Hime Marian" thought maybe -- perhaps I might do a bit more historical research. thanks for the suggestion though.

um.. . I rather you not. It's just a matter because this picture is fan art and well, fan art can get messy sometimes when not presented as nonprofitable fan art. I don't know what your D&D character is used for, but Thank you for asking beforehand. Nice matters.

the arts that i love the most are those that put traditional characters in something new and the art where i learn something new from it.  you just did both i love ronin hood in here, he looks more awesome than his traditional counterpart. the way he's head isnt angled to look at the target just makes him more of a genius in archery. i also appreciated your backstory in here. you did your research!

It's funny, Japan actually has a couple Robin Hood type figure, Nezumi Kozo and Ishikawa Goemon, which I'm surprised you didn't mention!  Yours is probably closer to Ishikawa Goemon.

Thanks ; I actually did bump into one or two short articles about the 2 Japanese Robin Hoods during my research for Ronin Hood, though I choose not to mention them because they didn't make any influence to this picture; plus their story made me a bit sad; they both die in unfriendly ways if I remember correctly
