Description DARK ODALISQUE | Digital Painting | 2010

A new rendition of an old character of mine, Nefret, who has not been drawn in years. Finally something to do her justice.

__

NOTE: Pose and costuming inspired by the incomparable Rachel Brice [link] Also since many people pointed out that I may have had my reference girls mixed up, this may also be referenced from Zoe Jakes
__

EDIT: Whoa. A Daily Deviation! I’m so, so… I don’t think they have a word for it yet! This is my first DD and perhaps my last so I’m going to enjoy it if you don’t mind Huh, a little bit of a debate as to if this is Rachel Brice or Zoe Jakes. Let me just say that the reference photos for both pose and costume were found under the search “Rachel Brice” The face was crafted by me and is not intentionally based on anyone. Who can say, It’s up for interpretation. But anyways THANKS so much to my good friend for nominating me, and for all you good people for stopping by!

Your best work by far I think..was reading your journal about not being able to find a consistent style throughout your work, this image might just be what was missing. It pulls together all your previous work of learning about faces and different styles and merging it all together. I think the mix of detail and softness along with how you handled the coloring and texture is mastery. Thank you for inspiring. I hope I can get a DD one day myself. Great work and keep it up

Yeah, I'm starting to find my groove. The last... maybe 5 paintings of mine are kind the direction I'm going now. It's what I found that I like to draw, what inspires me and makes me excited.

I think you are getting confused by the face. Zoe Jakes has a face very similar to a character she had drawn some years ago named Nefret. The resemblance is uncanny, but not intentional.

My niece is named after her, and I have seen the picture they copied many times over.

And I can attest after seeing her draw the character for nearly a decade that the resemblance is there, and that the draw was most defiantly inspired by that picture. She used it for reference material. But that doesn't make it a copy.

There is a difference between gathering references/inspiration and copying/adding to. DA is too full of this drama already, so I'm not going to drag this on further. Its out there.

Ohiochan In reply to DinkyTiny [2010-09-13 06:23:16 +0000 UTC]

If you need to see it for yourself, I'm sure I can find the sketches. I watched her draw it while listening to Beat's Antique and Abney Park. She refereed back to the picture on some details. Hands and posture especially. I'm not saying she didn't. But I defend my luvie. She did all the work by hand and the coloring on Photoshop. The facial characteristics are derived from a character called Nefret.

Using reference pictures for artwork is hardly a crime. In fact it is a long standing tradition of artist. The ancient greats drew from live models, though I’m sure if they had photography they’ just take picture

It is perfectly acceptable to use references when drawing. It’s what you are able to produce with them, how you can bring the drawing to life, how you can paint. At least I posted a note about the references I used, which is far better than many artists.

Please no more flaming on this topic. I never said I did not use photo references so this is a non-issue.

DinkyTiny In reply to Ohiochan [2010-09-13 07:12:43 +0000 UTC]

That right there is not a resemblance, but a trace. Lines/portions don't match up that well on their own. I know you are defending your love and her work, but this is not doing her any good. Traces and copies are NEVER acceptable to post as originals. They are studies that should be kept for self enjoyment and used as learning tools. She is a budding artist with potential. We can all see that, but the remainder is that what is posted above is a copy.

Ohiochan In reply to DinkyTiny [2010-09-13 14:01:33 +0000 UTC]

It is not a trace. I can't offer up anything else to prove this but I was in the room while she kept popping her head up to look at the computer and sketching madly in her lap. I know she did it herself. And she's not a budding artist. She's a college graduate with a degree in Graphic Design. She's been practicing art since 15 and she's now 26. I know there are a lot of people out there who copy and trace and such. I know there is a lot of debate as to weather it qualifies as legitimate art. But my girlfriend isn't one of them. She drew this herself.

I see that this a habit of her's now, with that being the case, I am saddened. Being a GD grad, she should have known from the beginning. There is no more to discuss.

Ohiochan In reply to DinkyTiny [2010-09-13 15:58:52 +0000 UTC]

Why are you being so judgmental about this? I'm telling you, point blank, I was in the room when she drew it. I watched her do it from stroke 1. She had the picture up on her computer as well as reference pics of her own character. She did not copy. She referenced. I'll even say she heavily referenced. That does not make it a copy.
