Description

Ovamboland was a region of Southwest Africa populated by the native Ovambo people. Under German colonization, many Finnish missionaries established forts and parishes in Ovambo villages. After Southwest Africa passed under South African administration, the bantustan of Ovamboland was created following the apartheid policy. It was abolished in 1989.

But what if the region of Ovamboland was instead given to newly-independent Finland after the First World War? I tweaked a bit the borders to give the mandate an access to the coast. I know it is barely possible for such a scenario to occur, but still.

The Finns would probably give up on the mandate and transfer it to South Africa sometimes in the 1970s, after the wars of independence of Angola from Portugal.

oh god people flooded me on reddit saying that I copied this from GN

However no, it's a coincidence, the Namibia episode wasn't even up on youtube when I made this map

Funny, I just wanted an episode of Geography Now today that discussed Namibia and it mentioned the Finnish missionaries.

AND THUS BEGAN THE MIGHTIEST EMPIRE THE WORLD HAD EVER KNOWN

I remember reading somewhere that there was a proposal for German East Africa (modern-day Tanzania) being granted to Norway as compensation for sunk Norwegian shipping during the war. It was very unpopular both at Versailles andΒ in Oslo, and was sunk pretty quickly.

Sunk much like the Norwegian Shipping

That must be the tiniest port town ever, like the Kunene River doens't seem like it'd be a good location for a port. Then again having the potential to use your own port instead of being forced to use an Angolan port or Walvis Bay... I guess it makes sense to try and build up one, no matter how bad it'll end up being.

I guessed it was better than making a port from scratch on the Skeleton Coast below

Okhotsk is another example of a port city founded on a poor site (both in the harbor and in the climate). It was built because the Russian Empire lost its conflicts over the Amur with the Manchus in the 1600s, so they might as well try and make do with what they had. Which is why once Russia re-acquired the Amur region, it slowly lost its importance.Β
