This is an amazingly powerful photograph. I'm choked up just looking at it and knowing the story behind it.

This happens in other countries too. Just last year there was a huge beach stranding of pilot whales south of Australia.
Indeed odd and very sad.

how wierd :\ the closest thing ive seen to that was a baby whale (and its mother i think)that swam up into the thames in london and beached itself, and when people caught it and got it on a small boat in an attmept to take it back to the ocean it died on the journey back which was quite sad. maybe one day scientists will discover why they do it

Whales have a sonar/radar type way of communicating and navigating.
One of the theories is that whales that have beached themselves have become disorientated for some reason. The other whales respond to the distress signals.

I personally have never seen anything like this before - only read about it in other articles. It obviously affects you more profoundly when you see it up close.

yes, thats is true, it must be quite terrible to see it on such a large scale. and thats a very plausable theory, i only hope it isnt our own radio sort of signals or the boats that throw them off course in the first place

Well that is of course open to debate.
