It was a specifically commissioned piece.

My what a large crest you have!

Some critters with massive jaw muscles have them anchored to a central crest; others just anchor the jaw muscles to each other. I've no idea what the relative advantages are, if any.

I've handled my share of Alaskan fox skulls and it's interesting how the crest varies by age and genetics. This is the first time I've taken notice of a fisher I guess. Fantastic animal and wonderful work as always.

I've carved red and gray fox skulls, and mostly noticed the difference between the two types, though no two skulls were exactly alike. I have noticed great differences in badger skulls, in proportions and texture.

Do badgers have captive hinge bottom jaws like wolverines? I've never had the pleasure of handling one myself but I do love the look of them.

DonSimpson In reply to mnshortdraw [2013-06-01 07:39:51 +0000 UTC]

Badgers definitely have a captive hinge on the jaw; quite impressive. And rather solid construction.

Wow, what an interesting looking skull! It must have huge jaw muscles considered how it looks like. Very nice carvings too, looks a bit dragon-ish mixed with tribal. How do you get all the skulls?

DonSimpson In reply to YikYik [2011-07-09 20:54:49 +0000 UTC]

Many carnivores have huge jaw muscles that make up most of the top of their heads; I don't want any of them to bite me.

I get skulls from several places: The Bone Room (a store in my area), taxidermists I have found on deviantART (such as Zhon and Morrokko), eBay, people (including myself) who find them in the wild, and people who get them from unknown places and have me carve them.

Haha, that's true!

I see! I live in Sweden so I suppose maybe getting them from internet would be easiest then. It would be cool to have a nice animal skull of some kind.

yes i know i own a couple ferrets. its unusual to see a rarety like the fisher skull. its beautiful

DonSimpson In reply to jsmokey49 [2011-05-31 07:05:32 +0000 UTC]

It was specifically requested as a commission. I'd seen pictures of fishers, but I hadn't seen a fisher skull until I had to get (and carve) this one for a client (who is a ferret owner).

zetsusama23 [2010-01-17 04:41:46 +0000 UTC]

Hm, what inspires the patterns you use? Just another question. Another , by the way, your work is really well done and as everybody's saying, the patterns really do complement the skull.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonSimpson In reply to zetsusama23 [2010-01-17 15:00:26 +0000 UTC]

I have in my head the results of decades of seeking out and viewing the beautiful in art and nature, which gives me a certain amount of feel for pattern (I wish it were more).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zetsusama23 In reply to DonSimpson [2010-01-17 19:02:06 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty neat, and you certainly seem to have a great feel for pattern. Your design always follows the flow of the medium, and it definitely compliments it, especially in the case of the skulls.

DonSimpson In reply to zetsusama23 [2010-01-17 21:29:25 +0000 UTC]

I also seem to have a feel for visualization, in both 2D and 3D, which I used in both my art and in my "day job" (for stuff like circuit board design). This lets me mentally wrap a design around a shape and see how it looks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zetsusama23 In reply to DonSimpson [2010-01-17 21:30:47 +0000 UTC]

That's neat. Really neat, actually. That must be a great help, I can't seem to visualize things very well at all.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonSimpson In reply to zetsusama23 [2010-01-18 02:56:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, visualization can be nice to have, but it isn't necessary; the main thing a person needs if they want to be an artist is persistance. And most things involved in doing art get better with practice (including any visualization ability).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

zetsusama23 In reply to DonSimpson [2010-01-18 03:12:12 +0000 UTC]

I agree in totality, I'm not saying that I'm an awful artist or anything because of my lack of visualization skills, don't get me wrong. I was just saying how that must be neat, seeing things worked out in your mind before putting them into practice. And it really must be useful.

We had a fisher living just down the road from us. I watched it run across the pavement with a baby bird in its mouth on a few occasions. Unfortunately, it was hit by a car and it's skeleton was pretty smashed. I would have loved to have taken it. LoL

That sagittal crest gives it a delightfully alien look. Great piece, Don!

DonSimpson In reply to savageworlds [2009-08-25 17:29:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

I've thought about making some skulls look more alien. An artist I know used to make life-sized porcelain skulls of alien animals. Those were amazing.

Interesting that you should put a fisher up now, I have a fisher skull macerating behind my house.
The sagittal crest on these guys always gets me. It's so big!

And awesome job carving it, as always...I like the swirl on the forehead and the lines leading to it, they really draw your eyes into there.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DonSimpson In reply to Sckee [2009-08-23 20:02:44 +0000 UTC]

Excellent. I see you have a good fox skull already.

The large sagittal crest and wide zygomatic arch imply relatively huge jaw muscles. Though I think badgers just anchor their jaw muscles back-to-back; it's the neck muscle attachments that look huge on them, and the jaw hinges.

Hooray for Mustelids
Those manic super-frantic Mustelids
Wild bouncy critters full of curiosity or of ferocity
At a high velocity
And any weasel, with perfect ease 'll
Slide in just anywhere with rare sinuosity.

Hooray for Mustelids!
