This looks lovely!

Well, read my carving essay, especially the section on safety, and any other instructive material you can find. You will never run out of things to learn.

This is, I think, one of my best pieces. It's the result of years of looking at art, years of doing art, and whatever it is that makes some things turn out better than others.

i make weapons but nuthing.. like this. i have been wanting to use a jawbone as a handle. but i havent hunted a dear or buck in 6 years. and i cant get my hands on one off the internet.. Β i litiroly have 6 swords. all withought handles XD

DonSimpson In reply to IronSpark98 [2014-01-08 10:20:05 +0000 UTC]

Frankly, I think jawbones make terrible handles; they are awkwardly shaped, and fragile.

well. i havent found anything that works. if you get any ideas let me know and if i can do it. ill let you know how it works out

I've seen some nice knife handles made from antler; I'm no expert, though. There are several knife and sword makers on deviantART, but I don't have a list of them.

Or fake swords for costumes. Try something with technical terms, like Damascus Sword.

magpiesmiscellany [2009-03-11 00:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Intriguing and beautifully textured, a bit intimidating. The sort of thing I'd love to spend hours trying to draw, but would be nervous to touch!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DonSimpson In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2009-03-11 02:42:38 +0000 UTC]

So... what about it is nervous-making?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to DonSimpson [2009-03-11 02:48:36 +0000 UTC]

I dunno. I mean, there's the whole memento mori thing, even though it's obviously not human. It looks a bit like a prop for a macbeth type witch's curse where someone's going to lose a thumb... Maybe it's the whole so fragile/menacing contrast that just feels unsettling.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DonSimpson In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2009-03-11 06:14:28 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm. It's not meant to be evil or threatening, but the artist doesn't get to choose what the work means to other people. Thank you; I'll need to meditate on this.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

magpiesmiscellany In reply to DonSimpson [2009-03-11 17:25:12 +0000 UTC]

No insult was intended. It's just there's a certain different feel to objects made from bone to those of us who aren't as used to seeing them. Culture shock as it were And a decorated skull seems to be required for every proper wizard's abode!
