Nah you would loose detail. Animals is about the moment and they are unpredictable. While I stood and had to prepedict his movement, in animal pics a nice face with a general stance indicator is better to get the feeling of the animal. If I would have rotated 90 degrees the feeling would be different imo.
If you look here

they are also cut offs
Going even further would loose the eye detail which is where the animal feeling|stance|habitus is communicated.
Maybe if you have a Megapixel camera.
If at all I should have gone closer. But you have miliseconds and they are very close in Edinburgh. So if you have the zoom lens on, you can't get a focus. You also have a very reflective window to deal with. Usually I have a cpl on, but they reduce a stop and with low light you will get not enough speed to freeze the animal. Yesterday we had again overcast although sun was predicted. If you get closer again your speed will drop resulting in a low ISO long exposure blur.
All that composition stuff is nice and well if I have time to compose the shot (like in landscape) or a Canon with 18 or 24 Megapixels. With the D40 or D90 you still want to get closer.
Otherwise you are just gonna get a general public view of the animal.

Yes I see and understand your point. I did say it was minor and that the heart of the image was the eyes and how they reflected life. I didn't know that these are being shot through glass. I am even more impressed with your outcomes. I don't know if you shoot for this zoo but I am certain they would be interested in seeing your photographs and hopefully purchasing them. They are all way above average for zoo shots.

Well the money is great...but I was thinking that you have such a passion for photographing these animals that it would be nice to be the "in-house" photographer for that zoo.

Gotta knock on the doors again and again...even knock some of them down. People will open them sooner or later.

Great DOF and Detail!
D90 has very good ISO performance by the looks of things
