With our permanent low light conditions here, my 70mm mostly jumps to 2.8. Depending on your Zoo, a CPL helps with mirror reflections. But as far as I have seen from TVD, you seem to have a no windows zoo. So distance high zoom is best.
We have our big cats here behind glass so you can use a wider lens, but very dirty and scratched glass is a problem. Also reflections, which need a certain angle.
I find it best to go when there are few visitors around and the animals get used to my presence. They get more relaxed if there aren't 20 arsehole Brit kids around banging on the window.

Our Glass (at Melb Zoo) is Terrible! Kids finger prints scratches and Using a CPL cuts a stop of precious light with means higher ISO needed. It's a disaster hhaha

Oh yeah, I wouldn't pick a fight with them, but a Sumatran Tiger would still be more aggressive.

Yeah, I used another HDR program. Photomatix makes too much noise.
