That is so cute!

These are ... sculpy, right? I still have a goal of doing stuff like this. I've never tried though so the first one's might be a little . . . awkward.

Still, these are adorable. Their expressions are so serene!

She makes her sculptures out of Sculpey Premo polymer clay... Where I live Premo is a bit too hard for me to work with, (which is weird because I live in a very hot climate) so I use Sculpey III, but I've heard that it really depends on the climate of where you live. Sculpey Premo for warm climates and Sculpey III for cooler climates. Really Sculpey III is just softer, but it holds fingerprints well so be careful. Oh, and check for cracks on the edges of your brick of clay before you buy it, that could mean that it got too hot in the truck it was shipped in and it is partially baked. It will be harder and sometimes even crack or shatter while you are working on the piece. Good luck!! And you really just need to keep making things, you won't believe how much better you get!! You can look through the galleries of Deviants who have been here a long time, the most recent Deviations are always so much better than the first ones!

That's very true. Once I've gotten enough of an income going I can probably start buying the clay. One thing I'll need to figure out is which clay type would work best for where I live. It gets hot in summer and cold and snowy in winter.

And sorry for making such an info-filled post... I mean it's great if you got anything out of it, but seeing as you want to do polymer clay you have probably done some research yourself. I'm pretty presumptuous sometimes:/

equigoyle In reply to MyClayWhimsy [2013-04-24 04:53:18 +0000 UTC]

On no, you're fine! I appreciate the input. Gives me something more to do research on. And frankly, I haven't done a lot of research just yet aside from asking questions. It's more so I can catalog these things so I know what to look for and such when I'm financially ready to afford the clay. Every time I visit the craft store it's ridiculously expensive for even a small package.

MyClayWhimsy In reply to equigoyle [2013-04-24 17:12:53 +0000 UTC]

Really? It's not too expensive where I buy, but of course I am selling my dragons to support my work. I go to Hobby Lobby and buy 2oz bricks, and with the coupon they give me everyday (from their free app ) It's only a little over a dollar.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

equigoyle In reply to MyClayWhimsy [2013-04-24 18:29:41 +0000 UTC]

Really? Maybe I was just going to the wrong place . . .

I'll have to try Hobby Lobby then. I haven't been there in a long time. Mainly I guess because their selection of Prismacolor markers, which is mostly what I buy anyway, is terribly poor.

But yeah . . . I'll have to look out for that.

So... it's the super sculpey for summer and the polymer for winter right? Or is it reversed?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

MyClayWhimsy In reply to equigoyle [2013-04-24 21:28:54 +0000 UTC]

Whatever you decide to do, have fun!! If you do go to Hobby Lobby, you can get a 40% off coupon from their app, which is free and can be found on the app store. You can use it every day, once a day on one item only, however you can use it once a day at each location, so if you have 2 near you you can use it twice a day. (BTW, the reason I have never tried Super Sculpey is it only comes in one color and I don't paint my creations)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

equigoyle In reply to MyClayWhimsy [2013-05-05 04:00:51 +0000 UTC]

I'll have to remember that app. And at least once or twice I might try doing the painting thing, at least to try it for fun.

Once again, thanks for all your suggestions. It's really kind!

MyClayWhimsy In reply to equigoyle [2013-04-24 20:15:27 +0000 UTC]

I've never used Super Sculpey, and Premo only once. In fact, I suspect that my Premo brick had been baked in whatever Texas truck that came to my Hobby Lobby, because it had the consistency of a tire. It shattered when I tried to thoroughly knead it. So, I'm not the best person to ask about different clay, because I found my perfect fit my first try. Sculpey III will remain sculptable in any temperature above maybe 50 (inside your house of course) but the problem you might encounter is if it gets too hot it is mushier than some people desire. Something else about the two is that to clean your creations and remove fingerprints you can use rubbing alcohol, in Premo your creation will no longer be sculptable but in Sculpey III your creation is still very sculptable. Really you just need to try different clays until you find the one that is best for you.

And... Prismacolor markers? Woah. I think... I think I need to go find a Michael's RIGHT NOW.

Sorry for the late reply. I'd intended to reply sooner but it's been a crazy week. Started a second job and it's taken a lot of my time.

Anyway, I'll have to remember that; sculpey III. Once I can afford I'll grab some and mess around with it to see what I like, and then maybe try some of the other types. Thanks for your help and suggestions though. It makes me excited to try! XD

And yes. Got to Michaels. These markers are super fun! Just be warned that even Michaels doesn't have the best selection. For a list of ALL the different colors, I think you can go to prismacolors actual site, or look the markers up. There might be a few sites where you can get 'em at a better price. In stores they're like, five bucks each. MUCH more than they were a few years ago. They've gone up. A LOT.

MyClayWhimsy In reply to equigoyle [2013-04-24 02:59:39 +0000 UTC]

That is difficult... Maybe you can just get Premo in the summer and Sculpey III in the winter? Those are the only ones I have experience with. Sorry, not much help in that department!!

equigoyle In reply to MyClayWhimsy [2013-04-24 04:53:54 +0000 UTC]

That might be what I'll have to do. Probably depends on what temperature I try to maintain in the house though, as well.

If your willing to sell it to me, you can name your price...
Or, we could bargain for it... Please?

I'm a huge collector of this type of thing.
