--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Figured I'd upload a concept sketch of the Blood Scarves, a mercenary organization that is funded by the Outcastes, my Chaos cult.

The Blood Scarves get their name from the "Red Scarves", the nickname for the Scipio Liberators regiment of the Imperial Guard that serves as the ancestor to the Outcastes. Ever since the formation of the Outcaste state, almost all military units from their territories sport red scarves as a symbol of their legacy. It's also sort of a shot to the Imperium whenever the Outcastes are successful in battle that they are doing pretty good for heretics. A joke amongst the Outcastes is that Orks think they're really fast opponents because of the red colors they wear. Since the Outcastes and Blood Scarves emphasize lightning warfare, the observation isn't unfounded.

Anyway, the Blood Scarves are loyal to the Outcastes and consider them a parent organization, but they are nonetheless a mercenary army that will fight on behalf of whoever pays them. This includes the Imperium, the Tau, the Eldar, the Orks, other Chaos forces, and even the Necrons. Hell, if the Tyranids had something to offer them and actually needed their assistance, they'd probably be ok working for them, too. In any case, the Blood Scarves are mostly Chaos worshippers, but have no qualms about battling other Chaos factions - the only group they absolutely refuse to fight are the Outcastes themselves.

The Outcastes use the Blood Scarves as both a recruiting group and an extra army that can go around the limitations that Kryze puts on the Outcaste military. Blood Scarves are much closer to the real Chaos religion, more so than followers of the more falsified theology that the Outcastes follow. As such, they use daemons a lot more than the Outcastes, and rely on the Warp and psykers more because of it. They worship all of the gods as one pantheon, but Khorne is usually their favorite since war is their business.

Any species is allowed to join the Blood Scarves, though no Necrons, Tyranids, or Eldar have bothered to do so for their own reasons. The Scarves usually maintain a diverse population of humans, Neo-Eldar, Serrasal, Loxatl, Kroot, Tau, Vespids, and even some Orks. Despite technically being a Chaos group, they don't care about religion as much as they should and members are freely allowed to believe in whatever they want. In order to make sure the more advanced weapons and technologies of the Outcastes don't get into Imperial or Ork hands, Blood Scarves have to make due with lasguns and shootas and whatever they can take from their defeated foes. Like the Outcastes, the Blood Scarves fight dirty and use whatever advantages they can to survive a fight.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's about it. I like these guys a lot, and they'd probably be the easiest for anyone out there to use as characters in a story or piece of fluff due to their flexibility and diversity. All in all, the Blood Scarves would probably possess a little of every tabletop army from the actual game if they were real. I'm still not sure if I like the uniforms I made for them, but I suppose they can change on a whim if need be. I hope to use these guys for something soon, but we'll see. The group isn't formed until about 5.M42, so anyone interested in using them may, just make sure whatever you feature them in is set after that time.

(Hmm, I find these guys a little interesting, however aside from the tradition of wearing a red scarf they don't particularly grab me. Their loyalty to their parents is interesting enough and they're a useful 'can show up most anywhere' group. However aside from that I'm pretty much okay with them. They're mercenaries, they kill people, do some chaos-y things, have some aliens. Pretty straightforward really.)

Yeah, I didn't do much with them after this and they've been erased from my canon for quite a while.
