Same here! I saw the really questionable American dub of it back then. Apparently Miyazaki was so dissatisfied with that dub that he swore to never work with an American company again, or something like that.

Hello! I really liked this so I’ve queued it on my Miyazaki-themed tumblr.
If that bothers you tell me and I’ll remove it. I always credit posts with the original title, author's name, and a link to their website
And if you like Miyazaki as much as me, maybe you’ll consider following the blog ^.^

This movie was my first impression of Japanese animation. I saw the crappy English dub, retitled 'Warriors of the Wind', when I was around seven years old.
The singular image of the princess pushing back against the baby ohmu as it tried to move into the acid lake was so powerful. That visual stuck in my head for over a decade, until I was finally able to track down what the movie was really called, and find a subtitled copy. Fantastic film.

That's funny. That is EXACTLY how I was exposed to Miyazaki, anime, and Nausicaa. Seriously. That exact scene stuck in my mind for YEARS. But I had forgotten the title of the film, and therefore didn't know what to look for. It was later, when I got in to anime, and finally Ghibli, that I was able to find it again.

There are certain images that are lodged in my brain; scenes that have etched themselves into my mind a long time ago. I don't know how they got there, or why I remember them while so many other visuals fade away.
A stout man carrying the limp body of a woman up a long flight of stairs. A figure standing in a vast field on a sunny day, while the wind makes the grasslands move like ocean waves. A woman standing on a snow covered dock. Shining animal eyes peering out from the crawlspace under a large old house.
I often wonder where some of these things come from, and if other people have seen them too. I keep wondering if I saw them in dreams, or in movies, or in real life out of the corner of my eye. It's interesting to know that some experiences have been shared, even if we don't know it yet.

This is cool! What exactly is the Ohmu? There's a robot that looks like it in the original Starcraft, the "Reaver", I imagine there must have been a Ghibli fan in their staff!

What is it? Well, in Nausicaa, the Ohmu are giant mutant insects that inhabit the toxic jungle. The world is polluted due to a great war that took place long before the series began.

Go to [link] for what that thing "says"....and a good closeup of one. The Reaver is a giant robotic pillbug that builds scarab drones that are glowing suicide drones that race out of its mouth towards the designated target and explode. Want to see them in action? [link] And it turns out that the credits of that game give thanks to Miyazaki...yes, THAT Miyazaki. Chances are the Reaver's design is based on the Ohmu. But Ohmu don't release homing exploding bombs, do they?

No, I just decided to use a lot of whitespace. It was more of a fast sketch than a formal, full illustration.
