Description Just finished this (about half an hour ago). Since the last Edward I painted was sold, I did this as
a companion to Jacob. It was quite enjoyable to paint (I only used six colours), but I've had enough
of Twilight for the moment (I've stared at these people for about three weeks in total!). I'm having
a bit of a portrait phase at the moment so I'll probably try another movie character next but at some
point I intend to paint some more animals and landscapes. Maybe some more pencil drawings as well.
Anyway, thanks for looking at this.

WOW! I really love this one! It's great! what colors did you use for the skin? And how did you get it to look more realistic??! I've been wanting to try and paint Jacob from twilight but i've never painted a person before, any tips?

Hi. Thanks for your comment. The skin was mostly Ultramarine, White, Cadmium red, Raw umber and Burnt sienna. With acrylics, it's a case of building up the tones gradually. I start with the darkest areas. When I've got the basic tones looking reasonable, I use tons of thin washes to help blend everything together. I then darken the areas that need it, working my way up to the lightest parts (usually pure white) and repeat the washes. It's quite a long process but I find the washes really help (of course, this technique only works with acrylics). I love using acrylics because it's easy to tone up (or down) areas that need it.
As for tips on painting portraits, I draw out the main areas first (face shape, eyes, nose and mouth). I then use a thin brush to outline the eyes, nostrils and the crease of the lips. It's vital to get the features right as you only need to get an eye out of place or the mouth off centre and it upsets the whole picture. Concentrate on getting these right. I always do the hair last (hair is not as difficult as it looks but it is time consuming).
Hope this helps. I'd love to see how you get on so please feel free to let me know. Good luck and if you need any help, don't be afraid to ask.

How long does it take you to do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DryJack In reply to madeleinenugent [2010-08-23 11:12:28 +0000 UTC]

I work about 4 or 5 hours a day (sometimes more) and it took about 5 days, so that's about (quickly counts on fingers) 25 to 30 hours at a guess.
