Hi. Thanks for the comment. I drew the basic details freehand (from a picture I printed off the net). I try to keep the pencil work to a minimum(eyes, nostrils, mouth and face outline) and then use a thin brush (and heavily watered down paint) to paint all the outlines before starting to work on tone and colour. The skin tone was achieved by painting the darker areas first (working up to highlights) and applying loads of thin washes. I use this technique on everything as it helps to bind the colours and give them a smooth look. I always do the eyes near the end as these are the features that really bring a portrait to life (and they're my favourite part). Hope this answers your question.
