Description First bumper illustration!
My theme for the bumper illustrations will be seeing Jupiter and Otto in the past so we can see them growing up -- or "getting older" in Jupiter's case. The illustrations will converge on a certain point in time.
Since I won't be able to show all the places in time Jupiter's been in the regular comic, these illustrations will help convey his age and experience. I plan on going in order of time, so it should be pretty fun.

SO. If there's a certain place and time you want to see Jupiter, go ahead and suggest. Anything after 1000 AD is good.
It doesn't have to be a specific historical incidence to be at -- in fact I'd rather only do a few of those. I don't want to do the silly Hollywood route where he's at every important event ever. But feel free to name a few of those, too.

This first one is a very "young" Jupiter with his first friends who're also the first people who got to study the big guy. Al-Kareem probably brought him there. Finding reference for Muslim clothing from 1000AD is very difficult, so I ended up just using portraits of scholars/scientists from the time as reference. They were doing some very cool stuff at that time -- it was known as the "Islamic Golden Age ".

Aww gorgeous! And so nice to see some of Jupiter's past on Earth, since I bet its a while til we see him in the comic.

I would say Egypt but that was before 1000 AD. Β

Maybe sometime in China or Japan, or maybe during the exploration days of America with the interactions between the English and Native Americans? Maybe they visit some of the Aztecs, Incans and Mayans? *shrug*Β

Very nice. Jupitar looks so out of place but so belonging at the same time.

I actually just saw a TV show the other day about how Muslim scholars were the ones to create some of the first robots. So it's really interesting you put Jupiter here, as if they took inspiration from him to create these first robots.

great, so he gives grand ideas of math way too early for humans to fully comprehend.

I like all the curious expressions.

Looks like Jupiter got lucky. I wonder if anyone has ever tried to destroy him for being a β€œmonster.”

really cool

I also was going to suggest the time of the first settlers in the US

I'd love to see him in the Viking period, or with Celts... or at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution... or in the Carthaginian Empire... or in Medieval / Renaissance England...

(too many ideas, sorry... well, what else would you expect from a History freak?)

Since you mentioned Tesla in the first chapter, maybe you could do a bumper of Jupiter speaking with Tesla, Einstein, Edison, and couple other of their contemporaries. In the same spirit as this bumper.

Oh gosh this is so cool! I love those expressions and character designs... Something about them gives me vibes from Dreamworks' older traditionally-animated movies.

Someone already suggested the thing I was going to suggest. XD But it might be cool to see him watch someone working on some really early computers, or maybe helping the person with it?

This bumper looks so much more better, than the previous pages.
I think, some pages of the first chapter seems to be a little bit "unfinished". But maybe it's just because it's the first chapter (Like how the pages in MtRC got better, chapter for chapter )

Yup - gotta work fast to meet my deadlines.
As I get better at drawing the characters I'll be able to draw them better at the fast rate I'm already doing them.

So over the course of ~980 years, he makes his way to the States, possibly alongside the colonists? Seeing him on a generic Pilgrim ship in the mid 1700s would be cool.

Yea -- I really don't want Jupiter to end up stoic and boring. He's gotta smile sometimes.

nomyai [2014-07-25 09:40:32 +0000 UTC]

This is wonderful, Zim, the gamete of expressions make this image a delight.

Jupiter's gentle smile, perhaps at the scribes intense desire to understand a concept they're discussing.

The scribes "but how is that so?" look.

The "I am so privileged to be allowed here." look on the young man with the scrolls.

The wonder from the gentleman reaching out to touch him. Β I hope he remembers his manners and asks first.

The best are the two elders in the background, bafflement on the right and awe, perhaps with just a whisper of fear, on the left.

I like your idea of 'snapshots' of what Jupiter and Otto are up too as the story progresses.

For Jupiter seeing him watch Admiral Zheng He's fleet, from a distance, depart Nanjing China in 1421 AD under orders from Emperor Zhu Di to map the world.

For Otto his first encounter with a robot would be fun to see. Β

Thanks! I'm glad all those emotions on the characters came through.
I like your ideas! And I especially like that you included one for Otto.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nomyai In reply to DrZime [2014-07-26 17:42:24 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome! Β Yes they did, loud and clear.

Thank you, I figure Otto is just as important to the storyline as our intergalactic adventurer. Β I do wonder, though, if Jupiter might harbor a tiny amount of frustration with us being rather 'backward' technologically for most of his visit here?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrZime In reply to nomyai [2014-07-26 21:53:22 +0000 UTC]

Indeed he is! Hopefully he'll end up being more fantastic than Jupiter himself. Though, that may be impossible given how strange Jupiter is.
