Description
For the contest at:The challenge of the contest was to pay homage to one of your favorite musical numbers. I decided to do this one, the only number Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly ever danced together in from Ziegfeld Follies.
It's a really cute dance number where they're best frienemies.
[link] Of course, as I write about these two amazing performers, I'm betting only 5% of you know who they were.
You young whipper-snappers! If you ever see The Bandwagon, Daddy Longlegs, An American in Paris, Singin' in the Rain, Easter Parade, Top Hat.... basically anything with Fred Astaire or Gene Gelly in it on TV, don't pass up watching them! You don't know REAL dancing until you've seen them. High School Musical is like remedial dancing for retarded jellyfish.
I tried to make my caricatures as simple as possible this time. I have a bad habbit of making them too complicated. Haha.

Very nice. The number is called "The Babbitt and the Bromide" and is by George and Ira Gershwin. To be either a "babbitt" (from the title character of Sinclair Lewis's classic 1922 novel) or a "bromide" (a placebo if one is ill) is to be a pompous, routine, monotinous, repititious person whose life just is endlessly repeating the same old same old all the time (George Babbitt is like this in the novel, though he gradually becomes aware and disatisfied with this tendency). In the sketch - once the song & dance number gets underway, whenever the two men meet - we are told they are worthy middle class citizens, which a typical "babbitt" or "bromide" would be - they say the same platitudes to each other even when meeting in heaven at the end. They have nothing else inside them to offer each other but that. The dancing between Astaire and Kelly was great.

I've never seen Ziegfeld Follies, but by golly I do want to know if you say they have both Fred Astaire and Gene Gelly in it. There's just no dancing like this these days. They need to bring it back properly.

I'm a bit curious about the birds. Well, mainly I'm curious about the one bird that seems to be appearing under Gene Kelly's arm, and what appears to be an even smaller bird next to it. Something about that area there seems a bit weird to me, but the poses of the dancers are quite fantastic, as is the angle you decided to draw them from. Very excellent work on the caricatures as well, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to tell whose arm the bird was under, would I?

Course I have older grandparents and parents. Plus at my grandparents, we made a point to play Singin' in the Rain one night while we were there and ate popcorn and apples and soda before falling asleep.

Oh, how I wish we could go back to movies like this! Many was the weekend when my mom and I would watch these movies on TV -- now when my daughter and I go visit her all three of us will watch them. My nine year old was fasinated with Daddy Long Legs recently. Fantastic job!

I've totally seen that number and it is fantastic and a bit.... mindboggling to see them dancing. together. It's too much awesome for one dance number.
As for the picture, I immediately knew who they were before seeing the title. And it made me happy.
