What does it mean to live by the spirit and walk in the spirit? Apostle Paul makes mention of this in the letter to the Galatians after they challenged his position as apostle. Paul say in this chapter that we as Christians, who were saved by our Lord Jesus Christ who has given us his Holy Spirit after his sacrifice on the cross(Romans 5:5), should walk in that Holy Spirit that was given freely to us after we repent from our old ways that held us back(Acts 2:38). When we trust in Jesus as our savior, we’re given the gift of grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit. To put it simply, the Holy Spirit is God. His spirit is given to us to guide us through our path and work through us.
Walking in the spirit is to stick close to him, avoiding the temptations such as idolatries, wrath, lewdness, envy, murder, drunkenness, selfishness, and other things that God won’t allow(Galatian 5:19-21). Walking with the spirit will cause us to develop its traits, or bear its fruit as Paul says in Galatians 5:22-26, which love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
It takes effort to walk with the spirit, especially when we feel tempted to run ahead or lag behind. Walking with the spirit requires us to have courage and patience. Just be still, listen, and God will definitely guide you with his spirit, and discern what the right and wrong choices are.
