Description Level 1 artillery unit. (weakest one) - LOW POLY. Red team version.

I have level 2 and 3 modeled and animated. I just have to texture them and I'll post images of all of them.

These are made in the style of Supreme Commander and other futuristic real-time strategy games.

For this I'm using a texture map and normal map at 1024x1024, a 512x512 specular map and a 128x128 environment map.

It has 280 triangles and was modeled in 3DS Max, UV mapped in DeepUV and textured in Photoshop.

It does remind me of SupCom, Aeon artillery 'Evenson' or something like that. Nice job! You did well matching the styles.

This is just sick man. Did you learn 3DS with tutorials or just messin around?

Both. I've never taken any classes related to 3D graphics so I learned everything based on tutorials, video tutorials, forums, messing around and reading about game development.

I did use other 3D software before 3DS Max though, like Truespace, Gamespace and Lightwave, so it was fairly easy to get used to it.

That's the best way to start learning in my opinion. And your works are so cool

"other futuristic real-time strategy games" = Halo Wars and SC2? :]
isn't the diffuse texture too big for such a small unit?

It is. I just like to work on my textures at a high res then scale them down to whatever I need.

In a game environment, I would use 128x128 or 256x256 for this, and 512 for big close-ups.

I'm using 2048x0248 for some of my large models but even those would be scaled down for a game, especially an RTS one.

That's a pretty cute little fella. I bet getting hit with the projectile doesn't FEEL cute, though.

280 triangles -- now that's what I'm talkin' about.

It is fun. It'll be even more fun once I make a few more units and make them run around and blow stuff up!
