Description Turns out Photoshop can do it for you! It would work much better if you start with a horizon line and line up the grids with said horizon line, but either way this is much better than using line tool and having to eyeball the vanishing points.

Feature should be available on CS2 and higher, not sure about older versions.

I just tried this out in CS2, but apparantly the "render grids to Photoshop" option isn't available in CS2 yet
Doesn't matter that much though, I'll just make screenshots of the grids and fiddle around with those then.

My version of CS2 doesn't have that option either. Taking a screenshot of the grid like you suggested is the best solution I've found for this yet.

Holy shit...thanks so much for sharing this! I've always had SUCH a hard time with figuring out perspective and setting up the grids, but hopefully this'll make things easier and I'll be able to actually get started instead of getting frustrated and giving up.

Thanks a bunch

I am graduated from the carrer of interior design, in class I always used to draw my perspective guides, it was really annoying so, sometimes I used sketchup to draw but this is really useful too, I didn't know PS had this tool.

Very nice tut! I don't use Photoshop, but, the techniques are translatable to one of my mainstay programs (Krita). And Gimp users Manga Studio users will probably find it useful too, so it's a great all round tut!

If I may, I'd like to pass on a trick I use sometime. I use Google Sketchup 8 which is a free 3D program and I can make blocks and shapes that approximate what I'm working on, then take a screen-shot. I can either use the pictures as is, or use them as a drawing grid. I find that very useful. You can also download buildings and whole towns, vehicles, etc. and either print them out as references or use them as drawing grids. I understand some of the pros at Marvel use Sketchup this way.

I don't know if anybody here will find that useful, but, I thought I'd pass it on.

haha yes, google sketchup is all kinds of amazing. i am actually one of those at marvel who use sketchup on top of photoshop xD

Wastelander7 In reply to e1n [2012-03-31 20:59:08 +0000 UTC]

Awesome!

It's such a great free tool that I am saddened that more artists don't use it! Especially comic and webcomic artists who have dozens if not hundreds of perspective shots to get right.

Rock on!

ooooh this is awesome. I have always drawn my own guides line by line, and they take so long and don't help me with scaling into the vanishing point. But this helps so much. I never realized it was in there. Thank you so much for writing this.

As a point of confirmation, it is available and even has a key command in CS5 (control + option + v) on my mac
