Description The Crawling Eye

Oh you had to have seen this one coming. Not only was The Crawling Eye the very first movie that was lampooned on MST3K, but it is also one of my all time favorite movies. No crap, I love this movie to death. The Crawling Eye, also known as The Trollenberg Terror, is far from your basic 50’s alien invasion movie. The very first scene of the movie has a climber getting murdered, his head being torn clean off! From there it progresses through the usual steps. The audience gets a hint of things from time to time. There is a subplot with a psychic girl, whom the aliens fear by the way. In the end though, the military bombs the monsters to death with napalm as they are besieging a scientific facility on the mountain. It’s pretty cool stuff honestly.

The Crawling Eyes are kept hiding for most the movie. Which is pretty wise and only adds to the tense atmosphere of the film. They sometimes act against people…mainly they strike from out of the fog that they travel in. A radioactive fog I might add you. But most of the time, the aliens use human puppets to do their dirty work. They end up killing a climber and through some sort of means, bring him back to life and use him a Trojan Horse to get cozy among the humans. He acts normal…sorta, but he is in fact dead. In fact his blood is frozen in his body. It’s actually pretty neat when you think of it! Really the only bad thing to say about the whole film is the effects at the end. The Crawling Eyes, when they are attacking the building, are brought to life by puppets. Certainly not the quality of miniatures that Toho was using at the time. But it is far from cheap, it is still done with care to the final product. It is just very dated by today’s standards. But the close up scenes of the eye just waddling right towards the camera are downright creepy. The smoke billows around them. And with their eye is just twitching around against that wet skin that just is dripping slime....it's a cool effect

So…your probably asking yourself…which artist friend of mind inspired this guy’s inclusion. And the answer is none. No one with any artistic abilities gave me this idea. In fact, he is not even here on DA. And also to the fact, the man can’t even draw a stick figure. Even has trouble picking out two complementary colors lol. But I still love him cause he has given me a lot. A strict moral conscious and work ethic probably are the most important gifts he has bestowed upon me. The person that inspired The Crawling Eye was none other than my dad.

My father, when I was a child, would just sit down and watch monster and Godzilla movies with me all the time. I remember going to video story with my brother and just picking out the movie with the coolest looking cover. Come on, who didn’t want to rent Graveyard Shift with it’s bloody miner skull haha. I grew up watching those movies with my family; and honestly it is some of the best memories I have. I don’t think I could ever forget any of those moments. So I wanted to do something just for him this time. I might not be as successful as my younger brother…or have the family….or have the looks….but darn-it I am pretty snazy with a pencil and paper He won’t ever see this, but I just want to say thank you to him for all he has taught and given me. This one is for you dad. It’s goofy just like me.

Come back tomorrow when I upload the final character of this giant illustration piece. There is actually two people for this last guy’s inclusion. Enjoy though and have a safe weekend everyone!

Btw, is going to be doing another giant kaiju world’s collide piece and The Crawling Eye is going to be in it! *squeeeeee*

The movie will always have a special place in my heart. Don't care if people rag on it, or if it was on MST3K. It's still a great movie to me.

Great interpretation! This movie scared the crap out of me as a kid in the '60's!

Love the John Sokko stuff too! Another childhood favorite

Thankx. I live to draw things that revolve around my life as a kid. I don't have an original bone in my body Just fan art of the famous and obscured when it comes to scifi and horror

Famous and obscured! I like that! Do you remember the Japanese superhero Super-Giant? I just picked up a compilation of these movies last year. My kids laugh because they're terrible, but like you, I remember these big memories from my childhood! I'm a HUGE ultraman fan and have collected too many of the different ultraman series as well as the vinyl kaiju and heroes. Unfortunately my 2 pitbulls love the taste of Japanese vinyl and I lost my favorite Atragon submarine last year! ARGH!.

Thanks for posting your great work! You've gotten me thinking about posting my kaiju art now!

Super Giant? Not familiar with that....but I am familiar with Space Giants. I have pretty much seen every giant hero series from the classic heydays of Japan. Ironically my favorite is the semi cheap Iron King. I don't know...I just like the music in that show.

Oh YEAH! Iron King! I caught some episodes on Dramafever (Korean internet channel) then picked up the series on DVD CHEAP from Amazon. I like the cowboy secret agent, weird sidekick who's actually the hero and the strange kung fu action. Plus the weird gang henchmen and their strange giant personas. VERY cool.

Super Giant was also known as STARMAN in U.S. Think it's only in black and white. You have some of the aliens from the first episode/movie in your art!

I too loved Space Giants, but I'm an Ultraman fan at heart. I have the Taroh series (with horrible phillipino dubbing) and am slowly but surely downloading Ultraman 80 off youtube. REALLY like the kaiju in that ultra-series.

Do you like anime mecha too? I LOVED getter robo especially. Caught it first back in late 70's when I was in college and it came on Boston TV as Force Five. My kids got me the manga comics for Venger Robo which is the Americanized version of the 3rd Getter series. We were watching Maizinkaizer on Netflix tonight, when I moved an old TV downstairs to basement for my kids and realized that the Wii picks up Netflix down there wireless! Even my giant black cats were watching it!

Keep up the great art!

Not all Anime mecha stuff i like. I mean I loved the original Voltron and Mazinger Z (though when I watched it on TV it was called Tranzor Z). I also liked the 80's version of Gigantor that showed on Scifi way back in the day. I do have the 90's OVAs of Mazinkaiser, and Giant Robo, and the Getter Robo series. Other than that there isn't too much I like of the modern stuff. Though Big O is good and for some reason I really like Goddaner. And no it is not because of the fan service of overly busty girls that defy gravity with their tits. I just like the action.

I remember TRANZOR ZZZZZZZ!!! That's how I saw it too for the first time!
I agree that the newer stuff is out there. I like the old mecha best.

Check out Venger Robo comics from Viz, you can google them. This is where the Mecha start getting wild. Evidently the old manga for the original anime was FAR more violent that the anime. I have the japanese version of the Gaiking series from way back when and the violence is unbelievable. And all was cut out for the american audience, probably for the best.

I too like Big O, but it kinda makes me sleepy at times. Used to stay up late to watch when I got home from working nights, and I'd keel over watching it. Great images and cool mecha, but the storyline could be tough to follow at times.

I'll have to check out Goddaner...is that the one that kinda looks like Mazinger? Have you watched Danguard Ace? I love the Japanese version. You don't see the mecha Danguard until after episode 20 as I remember. Great Scifi space opera.

Thanks!
