Description

Satanic Cyclopsia

Feeding Behaviors
This dragonfly has developed a singular well-developed eye equipped to see in dim conditions; its visual reception is incredibly well-developed and highly sensitive to light. This unique dragonfly uses its fast reflexes to grip animals and feast on their blood and is excellent at sneaking up to its meal undetected. This animal takes a niche similar to a mosquito, and having a wide preference for food, is widespread across all warm, lowland areas of Adlesia. Once an adult, their lifespans are very short. They can and will latch onto anything moving and there is no escape. They use small, sharp mandibles which have a mild anasthetic located in glands at the tips to puncture its prey, after which it laps up the blood. They will often grip a part of the animal which is hard for it to reach, so the cyclopsia wont be injured in the process of drinking.

Surviving the Heat
The satanic cyclopsia can handle hotter temperatures, with a preference for warm, humid areas although it can easily cope with desert conditions so long as there is sufficient shade and a source of water. Still or sluggish oxygen-low waters that are slightly warm and have abundant nutrients and sufficient prey are selected for more readily, making them a common sight in Venazius and Frijol Isle. Sunbasking is used sparsely, they often shelter during the daytime and emerge at dawn and dusk to feast. While still ectothermic, these little guys are well suited for crepuscular and semi-nocturnal conditions, and can easily keep warm given their smaller size and hot climate, allowing them to remain active somewhat after dark. They will also frequently dip into the water to stay cooled down and hydrated.

Territorial Behaviors
Territorial behavior changes depending on composition of the territory- as some surrounding ephemerel puddles have to compete more than do those alongside big sluggish riverways, for example. The males signal their ownership of a territory by stealthily sneaking up on a rival male and suddenly buzzing its wings. This startling attempt works according to those with the strongest buzz, who are usually more efficient fliers and thus better at battling- if neither of them backs down, they will engage in an aerial fight with the best and strongest flier usually winning the match. This also serves to select those males which can buzz while also evading predation, as the noise can alert predators to their location.

Nymphs
Red in color, the satanic cyclopsia is very small so as not to be detected by its host, however those in more suitable habitats can become twice that size, about that of a bumblebee. Eggs are laid as the female taps the water to release her eggs while being assisted in flight by the male. The eggs in these pools hatch quite quickly, often laid in puddles containing eggs and tadpoles, although larger ones may include tiny fish as well. The nymphs develop quite quickly yet metamorphosize from midsummer through to early winter, so that there are always abundant cyclopsia.
