A NightWing character I came up with! I don't really know how much I'll actually use him, but I certainly like the idea behind him. Calamity is a red-hued NightWing, and looks very ordinary except for the giant red star he has on both wings- he's also an animus. Personality wise, he's very aggressive and not completely sane. His story takes place about halfway between Darkstalker and the War of SandWing Succession, so approximately 1000 years ago.
When he discovered his powers, he gave his older sister, Invocation, a sword enchanted to instantly kill any opposing dragon. With the blade, Invocation quickly climbed ranks in the army, until someone stole the enchanted sword. Calamity had received the news from his sister and went to sleep anxious that night, but not too frightened. The following morning, however, was a massacre. Over a dozen dragons had been attacked, all with fatal sword wounds- some were mutilated to the point of being unrecognizable.
Fearing that Invocation may have been one of the casualties, Calamity flew to the military base to see his sister. She hadn't been attacked, but was furious with Calamity. She blamed him for the massacre, saying that if he had enchanted the sword to only respond to her touch, this all could have been avoided. In her fury, she attacked him, raking her claws down his side and giving him his scar.
Horrified, betrayed, and full of hatred for the unfairness of it all, Calamity flew to nowhere in general. His wound kept him from flying too long, and he crashed somewhere on the outskirts of the Sand Kingdom.
It took a lot of magic, but he eventually healed his wound and regained his strength. Mentally, however, he was broken. He blamed himself for the deaths, and using his magic was costing bits of his soul. He was no longer all there.
While in the desert, Calamity discovered an animus secret: that living things could be enchanted. He started finding amusement in making lizards fight to the death. During his time slowly recovering, he had started to believe that all dragons, given the opportunity, would lie, kill, and betray others for their own gain. Convinced that this was the way things were, Calamity set out to put dragons against each other.
The first victims he came across was a group of three SandWings on border patrol. They tried to take him prisoner, but he enchanted them to see only the worst in dragons- or, as Calamity saw it, the "truth". It wasn't long before the group was hurling accusations, and an even shorter amount of time before they had all killed each other.
The rest is lost to time: It's not even known if Calamity was actually his name. The legend was passed down among SandWings, but never spread to other tribes- to be blunt, the SandWings were embarrassed that almost the whole royal family had been slaughtered by a single dragon. Most say that the one remaining princess had managed to kill Calamity, while others say that he survived the attack and died out in the desert to his wounds. And, of course, there are those who say that he found a way to grant himself immortality and is still out there, waiting to drive dragons to insanity and murderous rage. But those guys are probably wrong.
