Description ... otherwise known as the Knotwork From Hell because of the vast amount of time and energy this has taken to design and paint!

**FULLVIEW PLEASE**

Details of the knotwork I've posted [link]

Interesting points ... this is the biggest watercolour painting I've ever done and the first time I've used watercolour for knotwork purposes. Was fun.

The writing says "Hwær cwom mearg? Hwær cwom mago? Hwær cwom symbla gesetu?" or "Where is the horse gone? Where the rider? Where are the seats at the feast?". These lines are from the Anglo-Saxon poem "The Wanderer", which Tolkien adapted into his "Where is the horse and the rider?" poem.

Original is 38 x 50cm. And nicer than the scan, as always.

Oh my gosh... this certainly looks like it took forever to plan out! Is this completely your own work, from your imagination? Everything fits together so perfectly. Beautiful job, and kudos on the time spent on all those knots. This is something I've always wanted to try out myself, but that would involve math, rulers,... and it just isn't one of my strong points.

for ever and ever! It's completely my own work, though I did reference George Bain's knotwork book to look at how riders were depicted in Celtic stonework - I do like to try and keep as much sense of historical knotwork as possible.

And believe me, maths and rulers are *not* my strong point either! I try and use them as little as possible, and knotwork is certainly possible if you can just draw squares on a piece of paper I never mind if every horse is slightly different, its that that makes it look handmade!

Very impressive. I'm glad you're trying to retain that artist's touch in your work. Although I love the perfectly symmetrical look, I like to see that human hands created it. In this case imperfection is perfect.
Great job.

thank you for saying that! I really feel the same, there are so many beautiful *beautiful* digitally made knotwork / calligraphy pieces out there, but I just can't appreciate them in the same way as a piece created by hand and with little twiddles and smudges in. Sometimes I think things can be too perfect, in a strange way.

Absolutely. I agree. Sometimes artwork can be too perfect.

Wow, that's a little creepy... I was just thinking of that poem the other day, for the first time in years.

This is truly beautiful work, and I bow to your knotwork-amazingness. *grovels* Not that beautiful work is exceptional for you... more like the rule! But this really stands out to me. Can't help faving it!

Oh my life!!

Actually, when I read the title, I could just imagine you going, "Where did that elbow go? I knew I had that knee somewhere! Where is the horse gone? Where the rider?"

It's awesome, Becky!

Happy New Year! ^^

I can only imagine the rediculous amount of hours it would take to do this. All your lines are very even; I'm impressed. It's a very complex design. I don't know if I would have picked purple for the horses, but it's amazing, non the less.

elegaer In reply to GoaliGrlTilDeath [2006-12-28 20:05:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

They ain't purple really, much more like grey

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Gold-Seven In reply to elegaer [2006-12-31 21:30:58 +0000 UTC]

The grey appears purple because of the proximity to the green background, I'd say.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

elegaer In reply to Gold-Seven [2006-12-31 21:59:44 +0000 UTC]

and because all greys I ever mix end up having a purple tinge! I was very good, I did mix the grey rather than just using grey. Actually, I still don't have a grey pan in my watercolour set - it makes me pay more attention to mixing colours

And yes, you're right of course!
