Description This text is part of a poetic translation of Bathspellaz, an Avantimannish rendition of the Gospel. It comprises the two opening stanzas, the lines of which are composed of seven metrical feet. Rhyme and alliteration are incidental to the style, though may be used for effect. A number of foot types may be used, and accord well with the various lengths of Avantimannish vowels and weights of syllables: ¯¯¯  (breve); ¯ ¯ ¯ (molossus); ¯ ¯ (spondee); ¯ ` (trochee); ¯ ` ` (dactyl); ¯ ` ` ` (primus paeon); ` ` (pyrrus). Another feature of high poetry of this kind is the extreme archaism of its lexicon and syntax. Many words that have likely been obsolete in the spoken language for centuries (or perhaps far longer) may still be heard in their ancient splendour on the tongues of the sôôômen, the epic recounters, which are the scalds or bards of modern Auntimoanian culture. (I put in the scansion marks for anyone who wants to try and sing this at home!)

I sing death of all Men in this fallen world
the evil of Powers mighty over men ruling
lo! the deeds of valour of shepherd, hero, king

I sing life of selfsame Men, a realm both near and far
comes now the star, fire-full over heven shining-black she flies
earthwards fell she, the star seekers three they are coming
