I came across this in the ProjectComment gallery and was so intrigued with all the little details. There’s so much to look at and it makes me so curious as to the story behind this forest and it’s inhabitants. The placement of regular trees, giant trees and those interesting red bamboo-like trees gives a sense of depth to the scene, making the scene feel more real.
A storybook illustration is the first comparison that comes to mind, but the colors you’ve chosen also remind me a bit of medieval illustrations, which adds to the fantasy feel of it. It sort of feels like a drawing from many years ago, created by someone who traveled through unknown lands, as a way to document what they’ve seen.
Something that I think the piece could improve from is more consistency in the dark brown background. It’s darker in some areas than others in a way that doesn’t seem intentional. I’m not too familiar with coloring techniques with pencil, (the main thing I remember from my attempts is that it can be really hard to get a solid fill on what you’re coloring) but I personally would try to either add more dark areas to create some sort of texture, or just go over the lighter areas to make it all the same shade.
It would be cool to see a bit more texture on the trees as well. Different types of trees have different wood grains, so you could base it on an existing type or invent your own like you’ve done with the red trees in the foreground. I’m not sure what mediums you have available to you, but working with some watercolor might help you get those solid or textured more easily, which you could them use pencils to add texture and detail to.
Overall this is such a wonderful and creative drawing. I hope you’ll keep making beautiful and imaginative works like this!

Thank you for the long critique! I appreciate it much!
I think a little bit "story book illustration" and a little bit "image seen by a traveller" sum it up.
You're definitely right about the trees. They could do with some texture!

I love the perspective and scale you chose, most people would have centered on the people and they would have been the majority of the image. I like how you chose to make the trees so long and how they are more of the stars of the show. Your choice allows the viewer feel the place and the wonder of it so differently.

Wow, thanks for the comments!
Well, the people really aren't the focus in this case. It's the Forest itself. The foolishness of one the people will soon come into play, sadly enough.

That's the thing about going into the woods! Lots of life to be found. And death.
Thanks for diving in and enjoying!

This piece is well crafted in it's simplicity. The trees are the first thing I notice and they're drawn quite well. The colors aren't hard on the eye, but gentle. The whole piece stirs the imagination, making me think of other realms! The anatomy on the creatures isn't too bad, but their arms strike me as a bit long. Nothing some practice can't fix. The size ratio isn't quite clear, like if they're tiny or if we're looking at everything from a high up view, so that's something to work on. I like the unusual colors for the trees in the foreground and their shape, and the variety in the small creatures used. You have a lot of potential. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the critique!
The people are rather tall and narrow, so long limbs are probably not too out of line; though I readily confess to lack of practice! I think the raven on the kerb it a little off, though. I was actually rather happy with the trees; especially with the little grove of bamboo-segmented trees with their huge fan-shaped flowers!
I'm glad you got transported to other realms, because that's what The World is! I'm glad I was able to convey that sense.

That's some great piece of art. I like the detail and the imagination of this one a lot. Especially how the tree branch turns into a hand. And the raven is really cute. 😊

Thanks, that's very nice of you to say! Hopefully this fellow will be smarter than the one who got himself spiked to that big tree!
Probably should have listened to the Raven...

Cool! The Forest is certainly a place full of many wonders both lovely and perilous. Some would say just stay on the road! It's so much safer! But a bold fellow sometimes just has to take the plunge into adventure!
And he'll probably come to a very messy end, but at least the story will be entertaining!

Muharharharhar! I can tell a lot stories about going astray and finding chaos. But that's how life should be. It's not about being like everyone else and acting like everyone else.

This is true. Gotta learn those lessons on your own, eventually. It's just a matter of whether you pay attention to the warning signs, humbly take the advice of the wise woman sitting by the wayside and never ever touch the still dark waters of the fountain!
