Description I wasn't originally going to do a strip like this, but I got requests from some of my curvy sisters out there for a little big-booty redemption, so this is for them. Adam ain't looking at her butt, girls, he's looking at yours.

From my fat'n'sassy comic strip, Snap Crackle Pop!

Oh, how I wish the big wigs believed in this. I love my butt, and I've had more compliments on it than I can remember. The world needs to change, and let's face it, we're on the forefront! And who can 'no' to a cupcake? They make the world go 'round.

On the real! Unfortunately, big folks are really getting the crackdown with America's new health care initiative -- it's kind of like weight is the scapegoat for any health issues a person might have, and in some companies, they're actually thinking of denying people benefits if they don't meet certain weight requirements. In some ways, I understand wanting to get rid of obesity, but honestly, some folks, like me and many many others, have thyroid problems that have nothing to do with what they eat. Ugh, the struggle continues.

I really, really liked how conveniently pointed out the sentiment I think is behind the comic. Nicely put and nicely worded so as not to set off raging wars, so any comments of mine on the subject can be calmly set away for a rainy day All I really want to comment is how I ADORE Kit's expression in the second-to-last panel. Beyond it being a face we've all made, I think it's one of those 'wow, art development' points, at least from the point of view of someone following you: that's pretty nicely expressive.

You have done an amazing job of suggesting, through still images, the sensual eating of a cupcake. Impressive.

Ha! Well thank you! Hadn't meant for it to be sensual so much as cupcakey, but glad it works!

I love that while encouraging positive body image, you're not putting down skinny gals in the process. We all get crap for the way we look-- it's so nice to see some affirmation that we are all beautiful! <333

elephantblue In reply to mishi [2011-11-16 23:49:01 +0000 UTC]

Skinny girls are great! I think people give you crap out of jealousy (I know I'm jealous) and also because skinny is the world's ideal, so everyone thinks you hear you're beautiful all the time, but that's not always the case. The only folks I have an issue with are those that care more about how they and everyone else looks than about what really matters -- being good on the inside and letting it shine out.

It's totally not! We all gotta deal with the same bullshit, just rehashed to suit the shape.

It's all about being good on the inside, for sure. :> <333

As someone who is overweight and trying to lose a few pounds I want to point out this Cracked.com article, The 8 People Who Will Ruin Your Attempt to Lose Weight. Don't worry, it's funny and not boring. In particular I'd like to draw attention to #7, People Who Are Cartoonishly Supportive About Body Image. I love food and I don't mind a cupcake every now and then. I'm also a regular reader and I love your comics. But this sort of mindset seems to be everywhere and it can really mess with an overweight girl who just wants to be healthy and have a bit more self-confidence in tight clothing.

A little bit of fluff is not a bad thing, but culture-wide support of being overweight is just as bad as supporting anorexia.

That being said, Kit does not appear to be overweight to the point where it's unhealthy.

elephantblue In reply to veddabredda [2011-11-16 12:25:35 +0000 UTC]

I completely see your point. However, I'm not so much trying to support being overweight as I am trying to support being comfortable in your own skin, which is something everyone struggles with, no matter what they look like. I've been trying to lose weight for ages as well, but my main goal is not I MUST LOSE WEIGHT AND NO ONE WILL STOP ME, it's more like, I must feel good, inside and out, and I know slender girls who struggle with that very thing as well.

That's what I was really going for here -- the ability to have some freedom when you need it and to walk tall with your freedom, to reach for a goal if you want to but don't let it become an obsession that gets in the way of feeling like a cool and sexy mama. I guess I just wanted the comic to make people of all body types feel like the ultimate goal is to feel like a hottie, and the rest will follow.

That is a sentiment I can get behind one hundred percent! I have nothing to add to that.
