Well, this one was done as a commission and is sold. I am happy to do a replica for you, but would need to ask permission from the original commissioner since the bracelet was based on one of her drawings. If she's agreeable I could make a replica for $90. Please note me if you'd like to proceed and I will reach out to her and ask her.

OMG! I'm out of words..how you can be so precise with the beading and actually create a"painting" out of it.. It must take so much time and concentration?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to mrs-jessicat [2011-02-01 20:25:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Once you have the pattern graphed it's really just a question of concentration and not losing track. I actually crossed out every line after I'd beaded it, so I wouldn't get mixed up.

mrs-jessicat In reply to Ellygator [2011-02-03 19:53:00 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I get it, it's a little like advanced knitting (with proper patterns).. I would sooo lose track though.. I can barely remember if I'm on the "right" row or the "wrong" row when knitting just a plain scarf..

(I'm behind on my critiques, I know!)

First, let me say that the messenger bag you traded for is sweet! As for your part of the trade, it was a pleasant surprise to see you using your beading skills to capture an image instead of a pattern, something you've done in the past (your reptilian bracelets) to great effect. I almost wish that Beetlejuice had a bit of outlining to bring his face out more, but then that would distract from the delicate shading you achieved. The bright red button really pops and brings out the muted lilac and black gradient. Its flat-out amazing the amount of detail you can capture with beads!

Ellygator In reply to ArdenEllenNixon [2011-01-22 13:30:58 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It was a real challenge to make this one work. I had done three pattern "translations", one tilted at a 90 degree angle which showed the central area of his face across the full length of the bracelet and was a really great likeness because of the large size devoted to facial features. I also had two horizontal designs like the one I finally finished. However, one of them also concentrated on a smaller slice of face for more recognizable features.

The one that eventually got picked actually took the pixellation to the edge of where a pattern moves from recognizable to abstract - in fact I rendered the image about 20 times with different program settings to finally get a pattern that would still leave him recognizable. After that I did not dare deviate one bead-color away from what I had, for fear that the image would slide down into a place where the colors didn't make sense any more. In fact for the sand-worm faces that still holds true - the drawing has details that even if you squint don't really pop out when you look at the bead pattern.

I'm curious as to how the close-up would have come out, as it does sound dramatic and certainly would have solved the beaded pixellation problem. Should you pursue this style in the future, it might be interesting to take famous portraits/faces and do close-ups of them--Mona Lisa, van Gogh, Botticelli's Venus, and so on. Actually, that sounds rather fun--now I wish I were a beader! Poe, Shakespeare, etc., etc...

See, DA? This is why you need a "save comment" feature, and not more llamas!

Ellygator In reply to ArdenEllenNixon [2011-01-24 13:44:59 +0000 UTC]

Yup, that's right! I think if you can bear to wear a face segment sideways, a 120x60 rows bracelet gives a really satisfying result. Otherwise there's always the bag or wall-hanging option... I think I will need to do some more research into getting a good skincolor palette assembled, beads with the same finish (glossy or matte, opalescent or plain) that really allow for good shading work on a face. With Beetlejuice I think I hit the highlights and mid-tones well with a sequence of opalescents, but I'd love to see if there are similar beads for the shadow tones...

ArdenEllenNixon In reply to Ellygator [2011-01-25 14:05:39 +0000 UTC]

I don't see anything odd about wearing a face sideways. If anything, that's cause to bring Picasso into it (which I feel dirty saying, as I've never liked his work). If the sideways factor is a bother, you could do a close up of eyes--who doesn't recognize Mona Lisa's coy glance? Ooooh, or Adam and God's fingers touching from the Sistine Chapel, though I don't know that a bracelet would give you enough room that.

I agree, an extreme close-up if recognizable, can really have a stunning impact.
