Description (2000) 5.5"x8.6" Mask, watercolors, varnish.

I bought the basic white mask many years ago during the carnival in Venice and did nothing much with it. However a few years ago I really became fascinated by R.H. Giger's art, and somehow that led me to wonder what would happen if you could make his style into "wearable art".

Unfortunately I do not own an airbrush, which is his weapon of choice, and to get an approximation of his amazing effects with watercolors and a tiny sable brush took a lot of time. The effects are mainly taken from a series of photomanips Giger did for an album for Debbie Harry and two of his biomechanical paintings.

I am quite pleased with the final result and have worn the mask on occasion, purely as an hommage, of course.

Giger's art IS amazing... but for some reason the first thing that came to mind here was Ghost in the Shell , for me. Ah, I have less traditional references I guess~ Very nice- I like how it looks almost mechanical at the top.

Giger's art is rather brutal - yours is so elegant - it made me think of Friz Lang's Metropolis more~
Stunning~

Thank you! I guess that would be a good reference, too, though I didn't have it consciously in mind.

Thank you! It was a very small little brush... but I wanted to get as close to Giger's airbrushed technique as I could, even though I don't own one of my own.

This is fantastic! R.H. Giger's work is quite a challenge and I think you did a great job incorporating the feel of his work into your own style.

Really... it was your first? You did an excellent job. You seem to have such a broad range with your art mediums and talent... I really admire that about your work. I used to do more painting/sculpture projects when I was younger but I developed tunnel vision once I started playing with jewelry fabrication. Mark is going to teach me how to make my own wax models and how to cast them... I'm really looking forward to learning something new

Great work on the mask Elly!!

Thank you! And that's so exciting. I have to bite the bullet sometime and get into more traditional silversmithing techniques, like sawing, soldering and casting... Oh, where is the time....!

I greatly admire and respect Giger...though I do admit that I don't enjoy 'all' of his images...the baby images bother me a bit.

But anyways, getting back to what I was originally going to say*grins*
-You did a fantastic job on this, especially for having not been able to use the air brush. Just amazing!!

I saw an image somewhere else, can't recall where, wherein someone had painted several plain Venetian masks in homage to Giger -they were pretty cool!

Again, really great!

Thank you! And I agree about the babies, those are weird. I really love the almost abstract organic pieces, the things that look like ribs and spines etc.

Some of the women are beautiful, but I don't care for some of the sexual representations or symbols that he puts into his work. I really admire Giger's skill with detail and colors and all, he's a master. But some of his work just gives me the creeps...can't help it. *chuckles*

Ellygator In reply to EMasqueradeGallery [2007-08-29 18:15:36 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Based on his art I don't think I'd want to befriend him or date him, that's for sure...

EMasqueradeGallery In reply to Ellygator [2007-08-30 14:36:32 +0000 UTC]

True! Though, from the interviews I've read, his wife seems pretty happy and she does quite a bit of modeling for his work... *conspiratorial grin*

Thank you! I think if I found a good supply or way of making mask bases I might, because it was fun. However, most masks I've seen in craft stores look just too "wrong" or cutesy to me.

Thank you! It's really a unique piece for me, too. The hardest part was to get it to be symmetrical, especially the brows and lips.
