Description (2009) 8 1/2" x 5 1/2", paper mache, tempera paint, metallic paints and glazes, ribbon

My own version of a Death Eater mask. I enhanced a regular blank mask with sculpey to make the brow ridges and the bulge for the mouth-grille, then covered the mask with four layers of paper mache and a flour-water mix. Once the paper had dried I lifted it off and reinforced the new mask with multiple layers of white tempera paint.

The raw mask was then ready to be drilled. I used my Dremel to sand the mask smooth, cleaned up the openings for the eyes and drilled holes for the nose, for the ribbons for fastening the mask and the openings for the mouth grille. I also scored the outline of the silver design to make it look as if it was a metal inlay and added four sculpey "screws" on the mouth grille.

For the finish I first gave the entire mask a deep bronze coat, then painted silver onto the pattern and antiqued the whole piece. As a last step I rubbed a little silver highlight on some of the exposed areas of the silver pattern.

As a surprising side effect the layers of metal paint changed the mask from totally rigid to a more springy and flexible texture - more like a leather than a paper mask, which makes it that much more comfortable to wear.

While the design is inspired by the masks from the last two Harry Potter movies, the actual pattern and shape is not a copy, but my own take on this type of dark wizard mask.

Thanks so much! The four I made I still have. I'd be happy to let any one of them go for $50 plus shipping (probably $7 US, $10 abroad). If you let me know which one you are interested in I'd be happy to let you have it. I prefer PayPal for transactions. ID is Ellygator13@yahoo.com.

That's a fascinating fractal. Let me see if I can convert this to a bead pattern. Will send you the design if it's possible and we can see if you want to commission the finished piece.

All of your Death Eater masks look fabulous, but I think this one is my favourite (I think it's something about the proportions regarding the mouth-grille) - it's like a Venetian masquerade-mask gone dark. The contrast of the bronze against the silver is really nice as well.

Thank you! It's kind of weird that it was my fist and really only meant as a trial, but it did come out the best in my opinion, with the smoothest and best surface... I am glad you like it too!

Thank you, and yes, it is, just newspaper, flour and water... The metallic paints make all the difference...

Love it! My mask turned out horribly when I tried to paper mache it, but I was using a softer plastic than what you were likely using. But yes, I love it. Kudos to you

Thanks so much! I guess sometimes it's just a case of trial and error. I actually had two attempts in this series that I needed to toss as well...

Very nice mask work. I'm so pleased to see you making these. Papier-mache is such an underestimated medium.

In my experience, the sponginess hardens off after a while. Also - you might like to consider this for your future masks - flour and water is excellent glue, but it does tend to attract mould, so you have to make sure that you seal the mask really well. Alternatively you could use wood glue or wallpaper paste, which also help with the waterproofing.

I'm looking forward to seeing more masks from you in the future. It's an addictive craft.

Thank you, that's some excellent advice. I am hoping that the layers of tempera and the metallic paints will help, but still, mold and something that's sitting right over your face is probably the worst combination in the world - can't be too careful!

xothique In reply to Ellygator [2009-09-28 11:38:59 +0000 UTC]

It should be fine - as long as it's kept in dry conditions - the problems start with prolonged wear, the moisture from your breath tends to seep in, no matter how carefully you have sealed the mask. All papier-mache masks soften when they are worn, and toughen up after they are left to dry out - I have masks from Venice that do the same thing.

See, that was Voldemort's strategy: join the Order and you get woolly socks and jumpers, join him and you get to wear kick-ass masks and swishy robes. Well, that got him style-junkies like Lucius...

Creepy in a gorgeous carnevale way.

(Can I have you papier mache recipie sometime? I still have two slightly mangled masks to fix.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2009-08-11 11:38:49 +0000 UTC]

I went really simple: a Wall Street Journal ripped into roughly 1 inch by 1 inch pieces and a bowl of a mix of flour and water. Just whisk the flour and water together and bring to the boil. If needed add more water while cooking until you have the consistency of heavy pancake batter. Let cool, dip a piece of newspaper in the goop and coat it with the glue, then place it on the mask mold and layer the paper pieces so you always have some overlap. For really delicate areas, like the tip of the nose or chin, you need to tear the paper pieces into smaller bits, so they don't make folds.

Thanks. I'm not sure how I managed to go so wrong. I think I tried to get it thick enough without boiling maybe. (It was ages ago. That and the paper making attempt got me banned from the kitchen for quite some time...)

Thanks so much! I did a male counterpart with Lucius' mask markings this weekend and I think I will go for one more matched pair. Playing with ripped newspaper and glue-goop is just too much fun!

This is just too cool. I hope I don't dream about these masks! You continue to be an inspiration. One of these days, I'm going to approach you about a commission for a silver clay pendant based on my tattoo. Give me some time to build up money though! I'm thinking celtic frame, moth with enamel, maybe a green stone in the center..

Very nice. Not so scary by itself, but if I picture it on someone with a big black cloak, I think I get the proper amount of chill down the spine. ^_^

And really...does anyone really believe they go and buy these things from an "Evil Minion Clothing Outlet"? I'm sure they're individualized.
