Description (2006) 9"x 3", Size 15 seed beads (transparent red iris, matte black, transparent burgundy), faceted cherry quartz, faceted jet beads, nylon thread.

This is actually a repetition of the pattern for "Sand Wing".

The bracelet reminds me of the myth of the phoenix who is consumed in his own flames to be reborn from the ashes. The elegant flared black shapes and bright reds reminded me of flames and ashes, and the red cores of the black pattern hint at the glowing embers from which the new bird will rise.

This is my submission for the ArtisanCraft Mythology Contest. [link]

Thank you very much! And you are absolutely right about the tattoo reference.

I'm too chicken to get a permanent design. The idea of pain doesn't bother me (not after major reconstructive hand and knee surgery), but I just know I'll get tired of anything eventually, no matter how well designed or how happy I am with it at any given moment.

So this is a good cop-out...

WOW! That's awesome! It's so vivid and bold... Very powerful, I'd say.

Thank you very much! I rarely do a pattern twice, but this one I just wasn't finished with.

this bracelet is just awesome! i wish i could have a couple how long does it take you to complete a bracelet like this?

Ellygator In reply to Kizziesama [2006-10-20 05:01:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I never work on one continuously, but if you counted all the hours together it would probably be somewhere like 15 - 20 depending how big/complex the pattern is.

The pattern looks like something you might see as a tatoo!

Actually that's where most of my inspiration for these comes from: tribal blackwork designs.

What is tribal blackwork?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to xelf [2006-10-25 03:43:34 +0000 UTC]

Like tribal tattoo designs. If you go to a tattoo site that sells free or for sale designs and you look under tribal you'll find a lot of the kind of abstract patterns that I design as the basis for the wing bracelets.

each tiem i come to look at these, the more impressive they become, so bold and gorgeous

somewhat gothic like as well

you can see all your hard work in each piece of your crafship, each one is so different and unique none is the same

that what i love about your work, you strive to find the most beautiful beads and colours for each one, i envy your hardwork and imagination

Thank you very much! I still surprise myself sometimes how colors will influence a pattern and make it look like an entirely different design. It certainly was the case with this one...

Wow, the different colours give this a completely different feel. It's so vibrant and full of energy.

Ellygator In reply to StephaniePride [2006-09-22 12:58:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! I think the lighter colors always seem to take up more space than the dark ones, and because the color values are reversed - the original bone-white is now black, the whole pattern looks different.

A PHOENIX! Among my favorite mythological creatures *lol points to signature* This is wonderfully evocative of that creature in an abstract sense.

AmberPalette In reply to Ellygator [2006-09-22 23:53:47 +0000 UTC]

YES. The modern American novelist Ray Bradbury had extensive moving symbolism about the phoenix in his novel "Fahrenheit 451," you should take a look sometime
