Description (2006) 9"x12" Pencil on Paper

Well, I thought about breaking this sequence up with another jewelry project, but hey, this little fellow just looked at me and begged to be posted, so here's another one of my lizard drawings.

This one is a Bearded Dragon (pogona vitticeps) which is an Australian desert creature, though there's been an export ban on them for quite some time, and any animal on the market these days is captive-bred. They are named Bearded Dragons, because of their long thorny scales under their chins which can become pitch black in an angry or excited male.

Normally they are very friendly lizards, though, that will get quite tame and form a strong bond with their owners. If I ever graduate from my two geckos, I'd definitely settle for one of these... maybe a lovely red or gold phase - and I'd have my very own personal dragon.

This drawing was based on a magnificent shot by His gallery is very much worth checking out!

Same here! I drew the lizard before I got my own beardie, because I always thought they were just the most beautiful little dragons! So excited when I finally had my own little girl!

Wonderful! I've now got one of my own, a female, nearly a year old by the name of Mo'o. She's really tame and a wonderful companion. I still have to get a good photo of her to draw her. She's got beautiful strong markings.

This is a very good drawing.

Thank you so much! Now that I have a female of my own I noticed that. She also deepens in color all over when I take her outside into the sun. I was surprised how much they can vary their colors...

Forever-Pirate In reply to Ellygator [2012-04-07 18:17:47 +0000 UTC]

You should draw a bath that is warm to your skin!
And put your dragons in it, so it's warm and deep on one end, just deep enough for the dragons to float, and shallow on the other.

They get really light in coloration, I have a lemon head, so she gets bright yellow.

I've actually trained my dragon to poopie in the tub only, it's much easier to clean up, and makes the cages remain clear longer!

Ellygator In reply to Forever-Pirate [2012-04-11 22:45:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the tip, I did some warm soaks for Mo'o during winter, and she seemed to really enjoy them, especially when I drizzled some water over her face. She'd face up into it and close her eyes... I also noticed that if she hadn't gone and pooped for a day or two the water would always make her go. I need to get back into the habit now that it's summer and I'm more likely to take her outside into the sun... maybe it would be a good way for her to cool down actually, on a hot day.

I agree,
Dragons are truly special creatures, I tend to spoil mine (Lola) Baths are the best way to get them moving and help them poop!
Yeah, I also need to get Lola outside a little more, though she seems to dislike the insecurity of the outdoors, she's got such a dark beard on her!

Yeah, that's tough! They don't need quite as much companionship as a dog, but your still need to be there for food and water and cleaning. We have a family who are our friends, and who also own a beardie, and we take turns lizard-sitting, when one of us needs to travel.
