Here's Rowena Ravenclaw with her Eagle as the Ace of Swords. Swords are traditionally aligned with Air and the quality of reason, and Rowena with her blue and silver house colors, the eagle as her animal, and the common room atop a tower that can only be accessed if the person has the knowledge to answer a question right was the perfect choice.

I'm a huge fan of your HP tarot series and love how you portrayed the Founders of Hogwarts. Β Thanks for remembering that the eagle is the Ravenclaw symbol--too many people think that it is the raven (the movies did not help). Β Also, just a small correction--Ravenclaw House is blue and bronze (the colors were blue and silver in the films). Β Gorgeous work!

That's okay. For me art is just a hobby, not a livelihood which I like, because it is never a chore, and I hate it also, because I'd just love an excuse to work on it all the time... As for drawings I use photos for reference or occasionally a mirror on myself...

Arinya13 [2008-01-07 19:20:19 +0000 UTC]

A perfect choise for the Ace of Swords! The swords represent the Air element and thus the mind, the intellect, communication, and strife. You'll find some of the more discouraging cards among the swords because it is our thoughts and words that typically get us into the most trouble. But it is also our thoughts and words that get us out, so even the worst clouds in this suit have a silver lining.

I simply love the way you have captured Rowena's likeness with the eagle. Their eyes almost seem similar. The whole feeling of the picture is also one of great serinity and almost otherworldly excistence.

Rowena Ravenclaw was best remembered for her intelligence and creativity. She was the most brilliant witch of her time, who, according to legend, died of a broken heart (cause inknown).

The eagle represents spiritual protection, carries prayers and brings strength, courage and wisdom, illumination of spirit, healing, creation and a knowledge of magic. The eagle has an ability to see hidden spiritual truths, rising above the material to see the spiritual. The eagle also represents great power and balance, dignity with grace, a connection with higher truths, intuition and a creative spirit grace achieved through knowledge and hard work.

Rowena Ravenclaw fits the symbolism of the eagle perfectly. She was the brightest with of her age and possesed great knowledge and wisdom. She was also very beautiful and possesed a special dignity and creativity. I am sure her intelligence also made her a natural leader and a person to trust in times of difficulty.

Thanks so much! I really wanted to emphasize the similarity between the animals and the wizards and witches as much as possible. That really guided me when I picked the models. I think in the case of Rowena and Godric that's really worked out. To me they seem like human versions of their totem animals.

Arinya13 In reply to Ellygator [2008-01-08 15:47:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, you have managed to make the founders of Hogwarts look a lot like their animals. But I also admire how you have managed to portray the individual cards (the Aces) and their meanings into your portraits of the founders. They seem to match perfectly with the Elements of the cards. And although the iconage of the original cards have been a little reversed in the way of the founders personal objects (Godric/Sword, Rowena/Diadem, Helga/Cup, Salazar/Gold Locket) you have still managed to keep the original meanings of the cards intact. As a long-time student of tarot cards and their meanings I really appreciate when an artist shows real interest in the complexity of this ancient system.

Ellygator In reply to Arinya13 [2008-01-08 21:42:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that whole alignment card was a bit of a tizzy... to go with the symbols I think Sword-Fire is a possible alignment, as older elementary systems had Swords paired up with Fire and Wands/Staves with Air, so Godric is no problem, nor is Rowena, as the tiara worn on the head is a direct link to the head, rationality and therefor Air. However, going by the symbols of a medallion and a cup Salazar should be Earth and Helga Water. However the whole rest of the symbology like the badger (definitely Earth) and the snake (manifestation of scorpio and definitely Water) the colors yellow (Earth) and green (Water) and the location of the common rooms under the lake and by the kitchens point to the aligment of Helga with Earth and Salazar with Water. Still it's a bit of a pull, and it does put a strain on the traditional deck meaning and symbolism.

Arinya13 In reply to Ellygator [2008-01-09 14:47:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think you have managed to represent the symbols of the cards beautifully, in spite of the few problems it has also caused. As you have said, at least the founder's animals make up for the little troubles concerning the artifacts of each of the founders.
