Description (2006) 12"x9" Pencil on Paper

This is a commission for the wonderful

The drawing shows her husband and her wonderful son. It was an absolute joy and a privilege trying to capture her son's amazing smile. Only happiness and innocence can smile like that - the spirit of a child that's secure in the love of his father. Thank you, Jennifer! I was so much fun.

As always...I am in love with this drawing! I am thinking that I may try to get some pics together/taken of my Aunt and her family and see what I can get you to do for them, if you are willing. It would be a great gift for an anniversary. (My mom's sister is like my mom now that my own is gone, so this would be awesome to get one done for them.) Again, thanks for so lovely a work!

You are more than welcome! It's always such a pleasure to work with you. We share the same taste, so I always feel very confident that I can follow my instincts and still produce something that pleases you. With more controlling customers that can be so much more of a challenge.

Thank you! Actually it was quite hard. He started to look like the cookie monster there for a little while until I got things under control...

Thank you! I got some really nice reference materials and there are a lot of photos of the little boy in her gallery, so I almost felt like I "met" him.

Thank you! I have seen him in quite a few of his mother's photos and he has just this incredible, open smile that lights up his face, and you find yourself smiling in response just seeing it. I really wanted to capture that and try and do it justice.

Elly, your pencil drawings are always exceptional. Very few people these days portray the father in the role as a loving parent, and I think you have captures the essence of it.

Thank you very much! From all the owner of the picture ever told about her family, he is truly a good and loyal man who has seen her and the family through dark times. So I think it was more than deserved.

very well executed, i find that smiles are a difficult to portray accurately sometimes, one of the hardest challenges in portraiture.

Agreed. The teeth are the worst of it - you don't want to look like a colgate ad, but neither do you want to portray a toothy monster.... ARRRGH!
