Description (1990) 9" x 12" Pencil on paper

This is an old one... I had my camera with me when I visited my parents last week and photographed a couple of older works that were lurking around on the premises. I'll post some of the others here, too, in the near future. (At least the ones I can still bear to look at without feeling too embarrassed...)

Seeing as my Dad just got out of hospital after a quadruple bypass surgery, I am happy to celebrate with this drawing of him that I made 15 years ago.

This drawing is amazing!

Even after so long after you've posted this, I do hope your dad's well?

Thank you so much, and yes, he is still alive and well and enjoying life. In fact, the operation made him feel so much better. I am very grateful for that.

Thank you! I did that quite a while ago, and I am still quite pleased with it. My dad hung it in his study.

I think you must have drawn the pic with much love for him. I like drawing beloved families and friends too, for when drawing, I can find more details about them, and can remember them deeper. Then, when I miss them in a faraway place, I can see very clear figures of them in my mind.

wow. I envy your talent. You are an incredible artist. You've become my favorite one here on deviant. I hope you post more of your work soon. Plus, I'm glad that your father is doing well. Judging from the comments left before this one, some of them were from august. Now its september and I assume he's home and he's doing great right? Well I hope he is. Your father is a lovely man. He must be very proud to have you in his life. Your such a great artist! Keep it up! and never stop!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, I may try to draw one of your harry potter pictures later. Since thats how I draw, I have to look at something and then draw it lol. I'll let you see it when I put it up sometime or if i get it done. but god your wonderful!!!!!!! GREAT JOB!

Thank you for your kind words about my father. Yes, he is much better after a bit of a medical roller-coaster, but right now he's actually well enough to travel in his beloved Tuscany. I am so happy for him.

Good luck on your drawing project. Would love to see the outcome!

Weird... I don't remember if I had seen this before or if I simply pictured your father like that. Yes, from your description of him (as a person) he couldn't have any other face.

Oh, you've been going back quite a bit. He looks a little older now, but it is a fair likeness. I guess at that age the character shows clearly in the face.

You're right. What's his age in the pic?

I think the photo reference was from a picture taken during a school excursion. He was in his fifties.

Thank you, and thanks for asking. Actually he's doing so much better than we could have ever hoped for. The operation really improved his overall strength and health and it's almost like it made him about 10 years younger to have his heart work properly again.

This portrait is really special... I don't know why but it's different from the others in your marvellous gallery I think it's really great to be able to portrait members of your family. Hope he's feeling well now.

Thank you! And yes, between the doctors finding he was suffering from Lyme disease (and being able to cure him) and his operation going very well he's doing great. I'll see my parents in December. Can't wait!

Thank you! And LOL! The funniest part: if I shared it with him, he would have NO idea what I'm talking about, he is so not up in current affairs, but he will teach you everything there is to know about gardening.

i'm going with the crowd here. it's really neat seeing a drawing of you near a drawing of your dad, definately a bit of resemblance. now let's see your mom

Actually my mother is hidden further back in my gallery. It's a drawing called "My Mother". I did a profile of her a while back.

Thank you! Faces are just such an amazing thing to draw, their expressions, the experience written in them, and the mystery behind them. Sometimes I think that if I can draw someone I can "get" them, understand them, but of course that's just a delusion...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PuppyGirl In reply to Ellygator [2005-08-27 08:23:08 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I do not think it is a delusion at all. Once i draw someone and study the planes of their face, their eyes, their expressions, it seems like I know them on a new level that I could not have comprehended before. It's very intimate.

I'm really quite envious of your pencil work - much tighter and better-controlled than my own. I'm much more about 'if it is sloppy, your brain will figure out the best lines for me' kinda stuff

How is your dad after all that? I hear that can be quite the surgical procedure.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to tower-raven [2005-08-22 13:47:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

And thanks for asking. He is doing very well. He'll be home soon, and my Mum says he's in great shape, much better than before the operation when he was very weak and in and out of the hospital for arrythmia.

You're right about the procedure, though. When I saw him he looked terrible with long scars on his chest and his legs where they took the veins. So I'm particularly pleased he's recovered so well.

Had to smile about your comparison of drawing styles. I tried automatic writing once, and had zero results - there's obsessive-compulsive for you... I wish I could let go more, results should be much more interesting.
