Description (2006) 16" for the overall length of the necklace, 1 1/4"x 1" for the focal bead.

Art glass bead (black, russet, clear and turquoise Moretti glass, 999 silver wire), Fireline, Bali silver, aventurine beads, onyx beads, silver beads, findings.

Another art glass bead. This one was built up from turquoise glass (still showing at the bottom and top), then encased in black glass. Afterwards I dotted the bead with the brown glass, then topped the dots with turquoise and clear glass and swirled them together with a piece of silver wire stuck into the soft glass between the dots and twisted around itself.

I then flattened the bead on the marver and added turquoise glass dots around the edges.

Of all the gemstone beads I have I felt this bead would work best with onyx, which picks up nicely on the black glass, and aventurine which happened to be just the same shade as the turquoise glass.

you dont happen to buy your clasps and metal beads from tierracast do you?

No I don't, most stuff is from Firemountain gems, my local bead store and a crafts chain store. Dou you have a link for tierracast? I'm always interested in researching new supplies.

Lucky them! I'd love to work in a place that supplied silver and jewery materials. I'll be sure to check out their website.

It does fit perfectly with those stones. I have to say it's kind of nifty to be able to think 'hey, i kinda get how she did that' even though my glass learning is on hiatus

You're my hero, Elly!

Every time I sneak a peek at your gallery, I'm impressed. I haven't branched out into lampwork yet, but hope to someday.

Say -- where'd you get that nice slab of rock/pebbled surface for your backgrounds? (It *is* rock, right?)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to LG-Young [2007-01-15 13:56:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And if you ever have a chance you definitely should give lampwork a go, it is so much fun, I think you'd be hooked for good.

The stones in my photos sort of came with the house: the steps down to the garden have that kind of mottled slate covering and around the pool area they poured concrete with all those little round pebbles stuck into it. Both make nice surfaces that don't overwhelm the pieces and craftily hide the fact that all of my "photo studio" is just plain old Jane sunshine outdoors...

Beautiful! This somehow reminds me of something of olden magick, not voodoo but perhaps a shamanic/witch like magick. Can't quite place it. I think it's because of the vivid blues though, as I tend to see that sort of ethereal magick in that colour. It's really quite beautiful, I like the right detail of the pendant.

What is a marvel? Out of curiousity.

Ellygator In reply to arwenpotter [2007-01-11 14:58:12 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I guess there is some mystery in the depth of art-glass beads, just like marbles I always think they contain a little universe of their own... A marver is a piece of pressed graphite (about 2"x2"x1.5"), like a small square tablet fixed to a wooden handle. It can withstand the heat of molten glass but does not react with it or stick to it, so you can press the soft glass against it in order to shape, e.g. to flatten it.

arwenpotter In reply to Ellygator [2007-01-21 00:55:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know what you mean! I used to pick up marbles and make my own solar system

Oooo, I see. I'm really keen on getting into things like lampworking, and silver smithing and leather working and carving and sculpting heh. there's a course for silversmithing at the School of Art (a University) mid year so I might take it, it's rather expensive though! But a full on week of 9-3. I just wish I had all the tools for smithing so I could do it at home; not to mention my own sort of studio!
