Description
Vaskal species/The Last Alliance (C) to me - no stealing!

Probably my best work to date! I drew this months ago but only uploaded and coloured it a couple of weeks ago.

Drean (Drey-an) outriders need a mount that is quick on its feet, strong, agile and most importantly, intelligent. Luckily for them, a well trained Vaskal fills all those requirements and they are ideal for patrolling the outskirts of the Drean forests. Under the regular tack they wear a light coat of maille which is clipped to the bridle and saddle to prevent chafing from excess movement. Over that goes a series of padded leather armour plates reinforced with a fine layer of hardened tree sap which gives extra strength, and a crinet which lies atop an undercloth of dyed green and red leather for extra protection. The resulting armour is strong but lightweight - perfect for a long day out on patrol.

A reference sheet for the species is here - [link]

Lines - Pencil and finetipped pen
Colouring - gimp and edited photographs from my own collection.

I like this creature. It reminds me of the donkey I had when I was a teen.

I love these creatures! I totally wish I could have one! Lol. They're cute and everything but have a vicious looking side to them. Vaskal make me happy inside.

D'awwww, thank yooou! ^^
I get the feeling that they're rather like horses in many respects - nice and friendly normally but push them too hard and they'll take your arm off. XD

Amazing!
It all blends together so perfectly even though you used completely different species to get this.
I also love the fact that you're actually doing something with your newly created species and created such a detailed description for it.
A fav, definately!

Thank you! I tend to draw horses more than anything else so I really struggled with the leg anatomy as they always end up with equine limbs! lol
I have a novel I've been trying to write for years now (which hasn't really got anywhere yet ) and as I haven't been able to do much writing on it, I thought I'd do a bit more worldbuilding, hence all the ref sheets and stuff that'll be coming soon.

Chichihua In reply to ElreniaGreenleaf [2011-01-25 22:18:58 +0000 UTC]

It isn't visible that you struggled with any of the anatomy so even more congratulations are in order there.`
I'm a real sucker for refsheets so I think I'm going to watch you now. Hell, even without the reffs your drawings are fascinating enough to look at and to watch you for.

Worldbuilding will surely help you on your way and perhaps give you some extra ideas about things.
Keep up the amazing work and that fav was totally in order, no need to thank me for that.

D'aaaw! *feels all warm and fuzzy* Thank you so much!
I've got a few other creature designs I need to work on this year so watch this space!

Weirdly I always find that doing the ironing gives me ideas for stuff! (just don't let my mum know or she'll nag me to do it even more! XD)

You're welcome!
I'll be looking forward to more of your works, definately!

And I know what you mean. Activities where you really don't have to use your head a lot also give me alot of ideas but most of the time I've forgotten most of them by the time I've finishing doing them...

ElreniaGreenleaf In reply to Chichihua [2011-01-26 16:06:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, exactly! I think faster than I can write too so even if I do manage to get a bit of paper and a pen, half the idea's gone before I can get it written down!

This is really gorgeous, I love the detailing and how all the tack actually looks like it'd WORK, the hairy textures and shading are so nice too, and as a bit geek I congratulate you on that spectacular metalwork in his mouth! Does this one have a name?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ElreniaGreenleaf In reply to oingy-boingy [2011-01-25 14:15:04 +0000 UTC]

^^ No name as yet (feel free to suggest one! )
I plan to sculpt one at some point this year and of course make the tack for it - I really can't wait to make the bridle especially - there are metal rings that link the noseband and throatlatch together and for some reason that's my favourite bit.

oingy-boingy In reply to ElreniaGreenleaf [2011-01-25 14:20:09 +0000 UTC]

I bet you'll wish you'd made it a bit less complicated once you start making it, lol

ElreniaGreenleaf In reply to oingy-boingy [2011-01-25 14:20:31 +0000 UTC]

Hahah yes probably! XD I'm dreading the saddle - all that padding!

oingy-boingy In reply to ElreniaGreenleaf [2011-01-25 14:21:58 +0000 UTC]

I cheated and sculpted the whole top half of the saddle from milliput when I did my LOTR ringwraith set, lol

ElreniaGreenleaf In reply to oingy-boingy [2011-01-25 14:25:38 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, I hadn't thought of that! That's probably the easiest way to do it actually - I could always glue thin leather over the top...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

oingy-boingy In reply to ElreniaGreenleaf [2011-01-25 14:29:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it made it look way better than I could have done if I'd tried actually making it, heh. I did use real leather for the skirts of the saddle, there was a grotty worn-thin-and-crumpled bit along one edge of a bit of gloving leather I'd got, which had just the right look

I'll need to buy some brown leather soon then - all mine's black or navy.
