Alright! So, i've been spendind a whole lot of time sewing the last litle while...as I realized how quickly my dealines are approaching. lol. so, here is the basis for my Opera Celes dress. Well...it will be used for other things too, but celes was my original reason for making it!This is my new Elliptical Hoopskirt, chemise, pantaloons, and hoop cover.This is how it looks without the ties done up (That's what gives it the elliptical shape) and without the bustle pad that hold it out more. but here it is anyway! Yay for progress!
The hoop cover needs to be attached permanently, lol, so pretend you don't see that! lol.
All I have left to do is make the petticoat (Crinoline) and perhaps remake my corset.
P.S. I love how bit the hoop skirt is! The bottem is 156" around! And I haven't even made the fluffy peeticoat to go on top!
~*Specs*~
Hoopskirt: 36 yards steel boning
5 yards light canvas
22 twist ties
Hoop Cover: 5 yards muslin
7 1/2 yards flat eyelet
4 1/2 yards eyelet beading
4 1/2 yards rainbow color ribbon
chemise and pantaloons: 8 yards muslin
1 3/4 yards flat eyelet flounce
1 3/4 eyelet beading
1 3/4 ranbow colored ribbon

This is going to be such a dumb question...but is there anyway to get this general shape without a hoop skirt? Maybe not quite as big but I have a costume I'll be doing in two years that it a wedding dress and I want a very very full skirt.
Just wondering if you had any ideas or tips. It's a ways away but knowing where to start would be nice.

The hoopskirt was invented to take the place of the hoards of petticoats women used to use to get this look. so techically, yes, you can get this look without a hoopskirt. It would be A LOT of work. Layers and layers of Fluffy petticoats, each of which would have to be specially designed to go over the next without disrupting the overall lay and line of the dress. You would also want to have s stuffed bustle padd in there to give it the Elliptical look.
What is the costume? I may have something more helpful then that if I know what it is! lol.
It maybe in the future, but there is nothign wrong with doing research for a project! I like to look up as much as can I that would be useful in planning costume construction, before I actually start cutting! lol. Less problems that way. Usually...ehehe...

The white "wedding gown" is the one I'm doing. I know the picture has Sakura sitting in a position where you can't tell how full her skirt really is, but for my interpretation I'd like to make it go all out.
If a hoop skirt is realy the route I should take...I'll look into it. For some reason my mind is telling me that I want all those fluffy petticoats though. -_-;

Yep! I have 19 of those just out of frame, three more behind the couch, four more in the cosplay room, two chest of drawers, a wardrobe full of fabric, 14 in the laundry room and one giant blue bin. Lol. Too much fabric in patterns? er...well actually perhaps yes. Lol.
That's what happens! I;m afraid it's the lot of the Cosplayer, Your house will eternally be a work room!

And honestly...I think it might eat anyone who stands next too it. We fit both james and I completely comfortable under it and we still had room for more!

Yeah, I will be wearing it to AV, but it's mostly for NDK. I want to get a photoshot in it while in Vegas.

Awww...Thanks! It's really not hard though, These pieces have been nearly idiot proof. I haven't drafted anything new for this one (*gasp!*), yet. It's been nice to just follow intructions thus far!
