Another entry for 's Fortitude contest. I don't know what it is with me and Chapter XXIII, but both my entries are from it. It just really touched me, I guess. I really felt like I had a hard time doing this scene justice; there's just so much tension. Maybe it will look better once it's colored. Ingie didn't give a description of Captain Derrick, so I just had to go by what I imagined him to look like, but really nervous LOL. He looks like he's sweating up a storm and holding his breath, no? Actually seeing it visually makes me feel quite bad for Derrick, but he deserved what he got. That's what happens when you make bad choices.

Chapter XXIII

“Enough of your excuses,” he told the captain harshly. “You think these men don’t have similar stories?” he inquired, gesturing to his audience. “They have risked everything to do what is right, to act in the name of justice, but you,” Link shook his head with disgust, “you chose the easy path of a coward. …No,” he then added in a lower tone of voice, “…you’re worse than a coward… You’re a traitor.”

A murmur of agreement moved through the others as Derrick’s head flew up to meet Link’s unwavering gaze.

“ Please, I-I thought you were dead!” he pleaded desperately. “You were dead; there was even a funeral—”

In a flash Link drew his sword and held it to Derrick’s throat, roughly tipping his chin up with the point of the blade.

“And what of your sovereign queen?” he demanded furiously, anger clearly lining his usually controlled features. “The day you became a soldier was the day you swore to protect her and her throne from the threat of war and the destruction of tyranny!”
