Which means poet Ahmed Nedim and his infidel boy. This is my translation of Nedim ’s 41 ghazal (lyrical poem) about an androgynous ‘infidel’ young man. In fact, ottoman poetry was pretty homoerotic.
1. Kafir, you have destroyed the realm of patience, are you Hulagu Khan?
Ah, you infidel! Is that you who devastated the World by igniting it with your fire?
2. Your coquetry is like a shyness of a girl, but your voice, like the voice of a tall young man!
Infidel! You are a disaster, because I do not even know if you are a girl or a young man.
3. Show what those satin tears on his shoulder mean?
Kafir! Is this why you are a burning flame, which burns the lovers by beauty?
4. What all these secret sighs and collars torn mean?
Infidel! Far from joyfulness are you moaning about your lover?
5. Who are you, my soul or my beloved? Say a word!
Who are you, tell the truth: lover or a beloved? Are you that infidel?
6. The pleasure of a fiery red wine flashed on your face.
Kafir! Are you that intoxicated lamp of the assembly?
7. Hey, why do you look in a smooth mirror so often?
Infidel! You still admire your beauty all the time?
8. I heard that an unbeliever took the miserable Nedim as a captive,
Are you that executioner of religion, the very enemy of faith, oh infidel?

Sen ol cellâd-ı dîn düşmen-i îman mısın kâfir
