Description Gad I hate coming up with titles for these.

Alternatively, I guess I could have titled it "Beautiful Nightmare" or something along those lines, cos although he came out alright in the end, the getting there was rough and decidedly not easy. Parts falling off, sticky clay, urrrgh.

But anyway, I like the finished result. I hope y'all will, too. The red color in the photos isn't quite true-to-life, even with extensive editing in Adobe Bridge and PS. It's more of a deep, dark crimson color than the bright in-your-face RED you see here.

I'm thinking about turning him into a character for myself, 'cause I like the colors and overall design. I dunno though. It's not like I need more characters. But he's so prettyyyyy. Well, I think so, anyway.

Materials: aluminum foil & masking tape; marble (x2); polymer clay; acrylic paint; satin varnish; shiny flat marblelike green thing

Awesome drawing of this guy (with a few artistic liberties taken that I really love):

I really like this! The eyes are so cute and I like the way he holds the gem. And I totally understand about the colors. My camera is cruddy, and it makes everything yellow. I have to photoshop it a little to get it to look right.
Wait, you use masking tape?? Does that bake well?
The whiskers are really cute, and I can't see how you make the branch-horns so perfect XD

Thank you so much! Haha, my camera doesn't like anything. It especially dislikes blue and purple colors.
It must, cos I haven't experienced any problems with any of my sculpts where I've used it. It just serves as a way to make the tinfoil base less pointy and sharp; it also helps add more shape when the tinfoil isn't enough. I think that these things bake at a low enough temperature that it doesn't harm the tape.
Thanks! They were a last-second edition that I'm glad I made. Ohhh man, it took me many, many tries to get those uncooperative horns to look nice. I made the one exactly how I wanted, and then spent like 15 or 20 minutes trying to duplicate it.

That's really cool! I never would have thought that masking tape was bakeable
It's amazing that you got the horns so similar--I run across the same problem when I sculpt feathered wings, haha.
Do you want to join my group? I'm not sure if this counts as spamming, so I'm asking.
It's a group for all sorts of dragons, but it's still pretty small. Don't know if you're interested.

Neither would I - I learned about it through checking out tutorials and reading FAQs from others who make these things.
Urgh, I bet! I've done feathered-ish wings one time, and they were an absolute pain to a) make and b) get both to look the same (or close enough!).
I don't consider it spam, so no worries.
It's the 2D-3D-Dragons group, right? I'd love to join!

Well hello there gorgeous!

You make such awesome designs with clay, there are so many tiny details here: like those branch-like horns, billions of hair on back and those whishers!
I can imagine it was difficult to make all those parts stick but the result is so cool!

Oh and there is definitely always room for a new character.
If you turn him into a character, I am so looking forward to see what kind of personality you give him!
I got a vision about him in my head but not gonna tell it if you happen to think something totally diffirent.

Ember-Eyes In reply to Agaave [2014-08-03 03:07:39 +0000 UTC]

N'aww, thank you! And you are closer than you think when you say billions of hair! I made so many little strands of it it's insane! I had to stop and take a break a few times cos my eyes were going crooked or something staring at all the little pieces and trying to put them on in just the right place.

The more the merrier, right?
(Although I have so many that I haven't even drawn some of them! That should be my next project...go through all the characters I have and really sift through them and pick out the ones I really like and really want to be more active in drawing or whatever. )
Haha, oh I think there's no doubt now! I've already drawn him out a few times. Haven't given him a name yet, though.
I always have difficulties coming up with personalities for them. I have some ideas for this guy, but nothing solid or concrete. It's always the hardest part for me! T_T

Agaave In reply to Ember-Eyes [2014-08-10 13:14:48 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome!
And hooray for determination to finish the insane project, those are the best kind of projects!

And yes, totally the more the merrier! I have noticed that with my HARPG (horse art RPG) characters; those pixel ponies just keep multiplying!
I also want to keep all my characters active and it is frustrating to see and have all the gorgeous designs and then I don't have time to draw them and develop their personalities and stories as much as I'd like to.
But on the other hand, it is good to have variety where to choose from! It might get boring to be able to draw only one character over and over again.

I also have hard time figuring out personalities but usually those just appear magically after I have drawn the character couple of times.
Names are the worst part, I always struggle with those!

Ember-Eyes In reply to Agaave [2014-08-17 09:35:01 +0000 UTC]

Hey, I'm all for your pixel pony herd to keep multiplying! More pretty equine art from you is never a bad thing!

And you do have a good point there; having a lot of characters to pick from keeps things from getting dull. Only having one or two to pick from when you want to draw one of your characters would get kind of boring after awhile. Of course, if you're me, you can just be lazy and not even draw the few main ones you do have! I'm so terrible about that. XD

I love coming up with names; it may take some time to find the perfect one, but it's always the fun part for me. And that's an interesting thing you mentioned about the personalities just coming out in the drawings...like the character just looks or feels natural or "right" when you draw them a certain way, or in a certain mood. (Or the characters themselves seem to demand to be drawn in a certain way or mood all the time. ) Most of my older main characters sort of just came to me with their personalities already there, but a lot of my newer ones are still just blank slates.

Agaave In reply to Ember-Eyes [2014-08-23 05:17:48 +0000 UTC]

I am happy to hear that!

On the other hand, if I got only few characters to draw of my own, I would probably draw more other people's characters to get some variety...
There are so many different sides in this matter!

Please give me some tips how to come up with good names! I usually spend way too much time browsing name generators, combining syllables and thinking about meanings...
Oh and you're totally right about characters demanding to be drawn in certain ways! Some often want to run and make noise, some just want to sit in peace.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ember-Eyes In reply to Agaave [2014-08-24 04:46:47 +0000 UTC]

That is true.

Haha, I don't really have any tips to give cos my own characters' names aren't particularly good or interesting! A lot of the time, I just carry around names that I've heard or that I kind of like in my head until I have characters to assign them to. And there's nothing wrong with browsing name generator or name meaning sites - I use them, too, sometimes! In Danthumar's case, though, I created him in a sort of tribute to a canceled television show that I really, really liked and his name uses some of the syllables/sounds from the main character's name. But I like the names you've given your characters! They all seem to suit them to a T.

Heheh, yes! Exactly.

Agaave In reply to Ember-Eyes [2014-09-13 04:13:27 +0000 UTC]

I actually kinda use similar method; I have written a list where I collect names that I think I could use some day. Whenever I get a new character, I go through that list to see if any of those names would fit for that particular creature.

Thank you! The horns were hard to get right - many, many re-dos, but they turned out pretty cool-looking in the end, so I'm happy I didn't just give up on them like I sort of wanted to.

Awww, hes so adorable! Then again, all of these little guys are lol. I really like his colors too. Its really strange. You would think a color palatte like that would look ugly, but it looks very good on him. I really like how the horns came out! The spiking you did on his back also came out very well!

Ember-Eyes In reply to Groudan383 [2014-08-01 05:36:08 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean about the colors. If somebody told me that sculpting or painting a dragon using light/creamy yellow, red, black, a weird brown color, and a splash of turquoise would look really cool, I would have laughed them out of the room. Yet here we are. Thanks a bunch!
