Description Here is a collage of Most of my model builds from 2013(excluding dioramas). I did a similar submission last year but unfortunately I don't have all of these models anymore or are displayed/stored in different locations, so I had to settle for a collage. A couple models didn't make this collage due to composition (M113 fire support, behemoth and XDF 502).

This shot not only represents hundreds of hours of work but my second year of scale modeling and being on DA. 2013 was a really great year for me and looking back I am amazed I did all this! 2013 also is the year that I really worked up the skills, courage and madness to start building stuff I could think up and really thinking outside the "box". Almost like "leveling up" there was a HUGE difference between my work in 2012 and 2103 with steady improvement along the way. I hope that soon with my airbrush, I'll be able level up again, making 2014 anther fun and awesome year in my hobby.

Looking back and seeing improvement is always good but the mistakes stick out more. Allot of the time this hobby is a comedy of errors that you slowly lean to never repeat. Like the first year (and I am sure this year and many more to come) 2013 was chuck full of "learning experiences". Already more than a few of these models have been parted out or given away but some of these I think are good enough to sit in my display shelf for years (despite their flaws) .I can only hope that I can rise to the challenge once again for this year, push myself and hopefully by next year have models that are even better than these! Hope everyone has a productive and awesome 2014.!

What were some of your BIGGEST "learning experiences" in 2013?
As always questions, comments and suggestions are welcome!

Wow truly phenomenal. Your learning curve certainly has shot straight through the roof! The age techniques you used are great, rust and dust makes them very realistic and adds a great story.

Β

Full steam 2014, I look forward to some amazing work from you

yea i dont mean to brag, but when i look back at my work in 2012 to 2013 its like night and day. 2013 was my second year and when i started really being able to accomplish not only more difficult work but start creating what i could think up.

absolutely! hopefully i live up to the standard of "amazing" i sure will try XD

you did ALL THESE in one year!! They all kick ass I think my top favs are the Patrol boat and Odin tank
Your airbrush will definitely take your models to the next level, the paint finish will be fine/smooth and "real" especially when painting bare metal like steel, adding even more believability to your creations!

My biggest learning experience was my first haha! I probably should have started with a small model The more i work on my spaceship the more complicated it gets, i keep adding new ideas.. and making each panel for the stealth fighter look is taking a looong time and the longer i think its all going to take if i can finish just that in a year i will be happy But jumping in the deep end is fun and im confident i can build it, if i think it through ... and learn to use my airbrush on something else first.. no way im going near this model until i can paint

yup one year buddy, cant believe i made all them myself XD
yea the PBR and Odin are probably my best models and the ones i dumped the most time into. thanks the airbrush still seems like a scary concept to me but i am sure once i fiddle with it for a bit it will become like second nature.

yea i was gonna say, you jumped in with both feet dude! sometimes thats for the best and i am sure you will excel in the upcoming months!

Yes i feel the same about the airbrush Thanks, ive had this last week off modelling, i had to get my sleeping hours back to normal i was only going to bed when the sun came up, its too addictive

well we will be startingΒ  the airbrush adventure together dude XD sure we can do it and once we do, in just a short time we will laugh at that fear muhahahhahahahah
yea dude its good to take breaks from it or you will get burnt out. i kinda try to set a schedule for my self. that way i take days off and have to keep progressing on my projects.
lol yea it can be super additive, been up wayyyyyy to late painting or obsessingΒ  over one more part XD

Good idea I need to do that and use an alarm clock to tell me when to stop

I only used enamels once as a kid, they came with a kit, i made a horrible streaky mess
You could let your daughter practice with your old paints, its good to have brush painting skills
I got Vallejo Model Air Acrylics for my airbrush and plenty of Vallejo primers and varnish too, ive got enough for years, Ebays awesome

enc86 In reply to jaffacakesandpopcorn [2014-01-22 20:25:34 +0000 UTC]

up till i get my airbrush running i have been hand painting with the "model master" enamels . by this point depending on how awake i am, i can paint a pretty smooth base coat and do a few of the brush weathering techniques . think its a good skill to have, as i see still painting details and other fine work with a brush.

lol she already does. i have more than a few "test" model hulls/body's kicking around. she will sit down next to me and work on weathering or re-painting them. she will be better than me if she keep with it.

i got a ton of paint in my cart, been slowly adding what i need to it(its adding up pretty fast too lol) i will be going for the same brand as well. i got use to having a ton of colors on hand(or use on every project) so i am trying to replace everything. lol taking a bit of my free time lol.

jaffacakesandpopcorn In reply to enc86 [2014-01-22 21:37:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes that's right you can only do so much with an airbrush, its an awesome tool to have help get the end result
Shes years ahead of me already then
I went for some panzer type colours (greens/greys/browns) in multipacks and then got a multi pack of metallic metal finishes like steel/aluminum/gold/silver, also gunmetal black and grey, a wash/sepia type colour too and a fleshy tone. For my spaceship i want a kind of USS Vengeance look but overall not too dark, a mix of different shades of bare metals, so it looks mean but you can still see details

pretty freaking awesome dude, sounds like an awesome plan. german WW2 colors are freaking badass. love them a bit myself, if you like grays, you got alot of choices in WW2 Germans XD

Like the A-team... i love it when a plan comes together fingers crossed i will be able to do it
Yeah i was like.. there are a LOT of greys greens and browns in these German colors, some yellows too.. but i guess if you want to be camouflaged.. those are the colors to haveΒ
I made a list of what i have so far in a journal jaffacakesandpopcorn.deviantar… but im always on the lookout for any awesome flesh tones or wash/ oils/ spills. I got the ones i have already by watching you tube videos.. Ebay and youtube are awesome for research and getting stuff cheap!
