What is with the stars on the WM steam engines? Is it similar to the golden eagles on SOU steamers?

I'm not sure, but I do know they where were on all passenger engines at one time, and on some freight engines (a crew's pride in their engine).

The golden eagle was placed on SOU 4-6-2s and now some appear on preserved freight engines and even S&A #750.

The stars, eagle and horns are gold, and the numbers (not on the headlight) and trim are yellow (and the rest of the engine is black).
