EDIT: They are NOT Juveniles! They were molting at the time- but they are mates, and they just had eggs this spring!

Lincoln Park zoo has 2 Cinereous vultures, These two are probably mates, as they continuously groom each other and never leave one another's side.

Cinereous Vultures are a threatened species, though their range spreads from Northern Africa to Spain, and then into the East through China and Thailand.

I know!

Little known fact: the insides of their wings smell EXTREMELY fresh, like clean laundry and rainy air- scientists have no idea why. Most people don't get to experience this because....well..duh. But if you happen to be standing say...2 feet away from one when it flaps its wings at you, you catch the breeze!

It's true of almost all true vultures and condors.

Aren't they? I've been told these guys aren't juveniles from one of the keepers, so it so unusual to have down fluff like that still! I'm used to working with and seeing Turkey Vultures...extremely different.

Sweet! I've been eyeing a D60 lately, our local camera store is having a big sale. It's got more megapixels than the D50, and a couple new features. Also, somehow, it is built...smaller.

yeppers....the D40x is the same size as the 40, and the 50, and the 70. its all about the sensors and fun inside the camera. i did a ton of reading on it, it will turn the brain to mush.

when ya shoot with the 50, do you shoot in RAW format? that would also make the images much better and bigger. but, you will need a program to open them up on your computer.

I have a RAW program built into photoshop...but I gotta say, I really hate shooting RAW. It's so much more labor intensive, and takes up an ungodly amount of room on your hard drive. For me, I just shoot in the best possible JPG format, no matter what all the experts say. For someone shooting wildlife, you don't want to need to carry around 8 billion memory cards so you can do a 2 hour study of a bird...

But you're right. RAW format is, by technical standards, much better.

yep, that time going over them and converting, and setting the right levels....it gets to me about 20 pictures in....makes me nuts! but since i see the benfits of it....i stick to it in most cases. yesterday though, i shot about half in fine, and half raw, just to see if i could make it work. since it was cloudy, i didnt have to worry about white balance so much or recovery from glares...so i got lucky.

Yea...I remedy the whole thing by simply taking a LOT of photos per subject, and am thusly guaranteed to have at least 5 nice ones to pick from.

XD all my buddies are artists...so they know composition and color just fine, even if the subjects themselves hold no interest.

love this image. did you photoshop the background out or did you use a lighting technique? it really makes the subjects stand out

I played with the layers some, but there was a black dropcloth at the back end of their enclosure. All it took was a little darkening and contrast to bring it out! Thanks much!
