Description Taken in the Patriarch grove in the White Mountains. These are bristlecone pine trees, the oldest single living organisms known. Some of these trees are older than 4000 years, and still going, even when they look already dead.

This is around 40 minutes exposure, during which I was just laying down, and contemplating the stars. Amazing feeling being there.

I hope you like it.

i like how the stars are motion blurred, is that to show motion against the motionless trees, or is it the perspective of nature?

IvanAndreevich In reply to i-am-mR-Me [2010-10-18 19:16:13 +0000 UTC]

The motion of the stars is caused by the rotation of the Earth over the 40 minutes this picture was taken.

What's the streak in the sky on the left? Air plane? I think this is amazing anyway, amazing solitude. Do you have any tips for star trails?

Great shot!
From the thumb I thought it was a fantasy painting.

I love the symbolism of Time, impotently going round and round, while the Tree, planted so immovable, defies change.

Bravo!

I thought they don't let people go there as to reduce stress/disease/abuse on the trees?

i remember those trees, awsome creatures, they can get struck by lightning and live because the O2 is so thin and there is very little brush to burn. the bark is so dense bugs cannot bore into them

i went on a college trip up in the white mountains and we camped out there for 2 nights...
coldest damn 2 nights of my life T__T it got below 20 and my sleeping bag was rated for 50 >_< i was so cold i cried, 4 hours from home in the middle of fracking no where fearing i would actually freeze to death.
