Description I was amazingly lucky to get these shots. When putting my dog out in the backyard, I happened to spy this beautiful black rat snake. So, being me, I ran upstairs and grabbed the camera. I followed it as it headed towards the fence, and watched it find a dead baby blue jay, who had fallen from the nest in the pine trees above and broken its neck. (I didn't see it at first, and nearly stepped on it when it was circling the snake taking pictures, but luckily I backed off and let it find it instead. Ick!)

Even more lucky, I got to crouch there (in just my socks) and take about 40 pictures of the snake swallowing the bird. Somehow, I can't figure out how no one was as thrilled as I was when I told them. The bird was already dead! So I like snakes. e.e

Anyway, here's the sequence. It was absolutely amazing. I had to run inside afterwards, though, as it was /just/ starting to rain.

EDIT and other notes: Wow, I can't draw a straight line. Photoshop does not always make photography prettier. This was my first attempt at sequencing. It needs work XD It also originally had five pictures, but it looked out of balance, so I made it only the three.

I can't wait to get my 'Venomous Reptiles' licence. I'm going to take care of a red-bellied black snake. ^_^

o_0 Wouldn't it be easier to eat the birdie head first, Mr. Snakey? (or Miss Snakey )

I think it's a miss, because we had lots of baby black rat snakes slithering around, too

It probably would have been easier for the snake to swallow it from the head end first, more streamlined that way.

Yeah, I thought it was odd that it went from the rear first, but that's what it did.

This was an amazingly lucky shot! And I like snakes too, I like this alot.

A bird of prey flew into my brothers window in about Oct. of 06 and broke its neck, it was a decent sized bird, like the size of a few month old kitten. It had beautiful feathers.

! That snakes going to be fat for awhile xD

I know the bird was dead, but, I still feel sad for it T_T Meh, like when I was walking home and saw a bunch of bird feathers sprawled on the ground all tattered and torn and was just like " ...teh sad...". I heart most little animals, even if they fall in different positions on the food chain XD

But nice shots in any case ^_^ Alls I ever get to see at my house is little garden snakes x3;

For the record, I found your devart via neopets. I'm a Darigan supporter too :3

Whee, go Darigan XD Very shortly I will be uploading a picture of Tandrak Shaye, our Right Forward, because I loved his design and couldn't resist drawing him X3

zomg I know what you mean x3 I always liked the darigan and halloween gelerts, but the gelert design at teh moment is such craps that you can only appreciate their true beauty in small events like this where they specifically revamp the designs for special characters.

If I was into furries, I'd so heart Tandrak xD But I'm not, so I'll have to settle for things like wishing they'll make a neopets card of him and that someday I may add to my collection :3 <3

rat snakes make good pet snakes! get a corn, rat or ball python for a pet snake. I love watching snakes eat...something awesome about it. What cracks me up about rat snakes is they can be so weird sometimes....this one is giving a good example of it...trying to eat a bird tail first...silly snake! You're supposed to eat it head first! Whenever I feed my rat snakes, they just grab onto the food and start swallowing...no constriction, nothing. I wonder how they survive in the wild. There can't be that many dead baby blue jays around! XD

Estomayka In reply to Opium01 [2006-05-29 01:59:35 +0000 UTC]

It actually did end up eating it head-first, it was just turning it around at that point.

And they do constrict, this one just happened to be convenient, I think XD

Opium01 In reply to Estomayka [2006-05-29 02:55:31 +0000 UTC]

oh, they'll constrict in the wild, but try getting one into captivity, and they forget how and will start swallowing it on the tongs. Trust me, I know, I own 16 of them, 10 of them are wild caught and don't constrict food anymore.

Sweet! 8D I never heard a rat snake before o.o Once I saw a headless snake in my old house in Panama and my father told me he killed it because it's a poisonous one. 0_0 So I guess I'm a bit late to see it alive. x3
