Wallpaper for the USS Darnell, a TOS styled forerunner of the Constellation class starship seen in Star Trek The next Generation.
The Darnell is the Fanship of the german Star Trek Fangroup "Star Trek Tafelrunde" (Round Table) a monthly meeting of different Star Trek groups in Berlin, Potsdam and Brandenburg. The USS Darnell was named after Hermann Darnell, the very first Star Trek casualty, the first character to die on-screen, and the first to be pronounced dead on-screen by Dr. McCoy in the Episode "The Man Trap".

Very nice.Β Aside from the Constellation-class, there was another ship class that used this configuration.Β It was the Cheetah-class and was more like a TMP-era upgrade for this Darnell-class.Β The Cheetah-class had a much 'thinner' saucer section, more inline with the Darnell instead of the Constellation.Β The Constellation seemed to be primarily a science and research vessel assigned usually to planets for surveying and cataloging and sometimes stellar mapping in less than desirable sections of space just to make sure those sections were mapped.Β The Cheetah was a fast-but-heavy destroyer.Β The Cheetah was built more for firefights than research.Β Β

Yeah, i know the Cheetah class from one of the Starfleet Reference Manuals from the 70s. But wasnt aware anyone else still had knowledge of this ship. So you are right, it could be a early Cheetah class before the fleet wide upgrade program.
