The Defiant with some of her sister classes, the Hornet and the Rapier.
The Defiant-class, officially an escort vessel, began development in 2366 as a small, highly powered, heavily armed warship intended to defend the United Federation of Planets against the Borg. The USS Defiant was the prototype of what was to be a new Federation battle fleet. However, the ship had numerous design problems that were made apparent during its shakedown cruise. These flaws, combined with the decreased urgency of the Borg threat, caused Starfleet to table its plans for a battle fleet and put the Defiant in storage.
The Defiant prototype was pulled out of storage in 2371 when the Dominion threat emerged. After several upgrades by Deep Space 9 Operations Chief Miles O'Brien, the ship was deemed worthy of use and more ships of the class were constructed.
Starfleet eventually decided to put the Defiant-class into full production. By the end of 2373, there were a significant number of Defiant-class ships in operation, and over the next two years, they played a vital role in the Dominion War. At the end of the 2370s Starfleet began to design sister classes of the Defiant such as the Hornet class, a less armed but much more agile attack ship, or the Rapier class, a blockade runner with strong shields to bring troops behind enemy lines.

Defiant class ships were named after battleships.Β The Valiant was a British Battleship in World War One and Two.Β The Sao Paulo was a Brazilian Battleship in as well.

The Defiant-class while it possesses firepower comparable to most powers battleships is more of a frigate or destroyer in weight classification. Personally I have always thought that the Defiant-class and her sisters to be the Federation equivalent of the Klingon Bird-of-Prey in that they're small, fast and agile attack ships that have extremely sharp teeth and claws to rip an enemy apart with.

Never seen a gunship in Star Trek, but from size i would say a heavier armed Runabout would do it, or maybe the Ju'day class Maquis ship.

I deleted the term "Battleship" from the description. Star Treks classification for ships is often a mess.
The Defiant was ordered from producer Rick Berman as an "Pocket Battleship" and Doug Drexler used that term often during the production.

The Defiant and Defiant-class ships have been my personal favorite since their introduction in DS9.Β Are the Hornet and Rapier canon or of your own creation?

Hornet and Rapier are Fandesigns, but not my own. I just refit the Rapier class because it was an over 20 years old model and it was my try to upgrade a bit with more details.
