This is my first acrylic painting (wait, that's a lie, this is my second, but I only ever got half way through my first try...it's still sitting on the easel waiting to be finished...) so cut me some slack lol. I know it's not all that good but I'll get the hang of paints one of these days. This was my "Secret Santa" present for one of my team mates who has a beach themed room... I'm going to ask her to take a better picture of it for me. I found the reference picture on the net and just quickly sketched an outline and painted away.Any pointers or technique tips would be appreciated in regards to using acrylic paints, I had a hard time deciding where to start.

It's funny, though. We had a series of 5 or 6 really huge storms over the past two weeks. And now... it's about 40 to45 degrees during the day. Tropical by comparison

I hear yah! It got down to -40 (celcius, which is the same as 40F I do believe) plus the windchill, and today, at -2 it was damn near balmy. Didn't know what to do with myself.

I'm not sure if your preference is to acrylic over oils, or not, but if you want to slow the drying time of acrylics down in order to get a real good blend, try some "retarder"(no, I'm not trying to be a wiseguy...). I was turned onto it a few years ago when I was having a hard time finding glycerin...I've tried oils, but they're too "tempermental" for me...acrylic's a LOT smoother, and I LOVE the blend (I think I went on a bit of a tangent, I guess...sorry!)...GREAT piece, by the way...tranquility is the message it conveys...(okay, I'm rambling on TOO much..I'm goin' t' bed...)

I like properties of both, actually. Leaning more towards oil though, there's something so timeless about them. Acrylics are awesome for the drying time, I just haven't got the hang of them yet (but then again, same goes for oils 
P.S., Anyone who says rambling is always a bad thing is a bloody liar

Whichever you choose, remember to have fun with it! I didn't take to oils too well, and kinda formed a mental block on using them, despite the fact that my first time trying them was years ago, and I haven't picked them up since...I'm going to go into "physician heal thyself" mode, and purchase some oils just to see what I can do!
p.s....you're SO correct about rambling hypocrites...
