Description This might be what you'd see, if you peeked into a hollow tree with a flashlight in the Jurassic.

A group of anurognathids, perhaps a mother with almost fully-grown flaplings still following her, or a male with a harem, sharing a day roost. There's no direct evidence of social behaviour in anurognathids, but it's, I think, plausible speculation.

A digital painting, inspired by a photograph of an owl family I saw.

Man, after all the abuse my anuragnathids have been getting lately in my paintings, all I see when I revisit this painting is crushing guilt from those pleading eyes. Beautiful work though, just as I remember it!

Haha, thanks! Your anurognathids don't seem to be enjoying their lives. Interesting paleoart, though!

How would a pet pterosaur be?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eurwentala In reply to PaleoShack [2015-09-30 09:41:41 +0000 UTC]

Demanding, I'd guess. But awesome.

I know someone who has a pet owl (due to some sort of rescue circumstances: usually, owls are illegal as pets in my country). He's apparently a fine pet, as long as kept by someone with expertise and devotion to give the animal the space and peace it needs. I guess a small noctural pterosaur such as Anurognathus would not be very different.

Owls are dinosaurs so basically this pterosaur is a clone due to convergent evolution.

Maybe they had a eusocial caste system.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Eurwentala In reply to Helixdude [2015-09-15 07:33:27 +0000 UTC]

That would be entirely hypothetical and possibly very unlikely (there's only one species of eusocial vertebrate living today, so I suppose it's safe to assume they weren't very common in the past either), but not impossible.

Helixdude In reply to Eurwentala [2015-09-16 01:22:26 +0000 UTC]

Or maybe they had a symbiotic relationship with sauropods, who in turn could've had whole ecosystems living on their large slow moving bodies.

AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE but in all ahem, seriousness...I love that you're portraying this kind of behavior with these pterosaurs. Really, Anurognathus has come a long way since I was first introduced to it in WWD. Sure, its tiny size made it cute then but this is going over the limit with adorableness!
