Description The best way to learn it is to draw it.

The phylogeny of placental mammals. This was combined from multiple sources, and I'm not sure if the placement of some taxa (Tubulidentata, Scandentia etc.) reflects the latest consensus. The general idea, however, should be right.

The silhouettes are Public domain and Creative Common images from the wonderful Phylopic ([link] ), made by Steven Traver, Davir Orr, T. Michael Keesey, Mateus Zica and Mo Hassan.

Edited 31.12.2012: Fixed the leaf that made Rodentia look polyphyletic.

Is that a Juramaia or other Mesozoic mammal at the base?

Yeah, Zalambdalestes, to be exact.

Also, you might want to fix the position of Rodentia; it looks like two separate branches (one laurasiatherian, one euarchontogliran) reach to it.

Oh, it does look like that. Thanks for mentioning,, I'll fix that later. Actually it's just a leaf hanging from the laurasiatherian branch.

Having one group of animals evolve from two fully separate branches sounds like some of the weirder ideas about evolution I have heard from common folk.

Yeah, it falsely gives the impression of the Rodentia being a polyphyletic group.
