Description On the snowy morning of January 6, 1954, LE&E I-2-b Mikado #5178 leads a Local Freight from Kalamazoo MI to Indianapolis IN on the Michigan Line outside of Fletcher's Creek MI. The train is loaded with a variety of cargo, too many to count, heading for local industries in Indianapolis. Just outside of Fletcher's Creek is where the Michigan Line from South Bend & the Indianapolis Line to Indy split off, with a Small Yard serving a Local Warehouse & a Freight depot for both lines. The I-2 Mikado's were copies of USRA Standard Mikado's that were a regular of the USRA Control of the Railroads during WWI. The I-2's had the same specs at the USRA Light & Heavy Mikado's, making them similar the USRA Locomotives, with the exception of a Booster on the Trailing Truck. Unlike other Railroad's, it's unknown how many LE&E ordered, but the answer is a lot, too many to count. By the time this photo was shot, the Mikado's were reassigned to Local & Branch Line freight duties as the Alco FA-1's, EMD F Units & GP7's have taken over the Heavier Freight assignments. Of the many I-2 Mikado's built, Only #5193, an I-2-a, survives & is owned by the Lake Erie Chapter NRHS.
